We love everywhere in the Southern Highlands, but chose Moss Vale for a central location, and because we have previously dined at the Moss Vale Hotel. Porterhouse Bistro is famous for its steaks, but we were disappointed with the portion size of jacket potato and vegetables. Also no gluten free desserts. First weekend of each month has tours of Retford Park house and gardens in Bowral. We loved it! Dirty Jane's in Bowral is a great place for antiques and they have a cute tea room which does High Tea, with a gluten free option. Yummy!
The Southern highlands are lovely with old world accommodation and spectacular scenery. The Golf courses are very good and lots of great resturants, not much open for dinner Sunday nights. We love Cafe Rosso in Bowral for Italian dinner and The Briars for lunch. Spinners Pizza is good for takeaway Sundaynights. Our stay at Dormie House was good, friendly staff ,clean and tidy, full old world charm. The room was a bit cold though. It gets very cold in winter so warm clothes and adequate heating are a must.
Many beautiful day trips to do from Moss Vale. Driving through lush green countryside, past beautiful properties and their residences, makes for enjoyable outings. Waterfalls are beautiful and some good Bush walking too. A good variety of restaurants.
Very friendly town. Lovely park right near the railway station. Very convenient place to stay if travelling on the XPT to and from Melbourne. Brilliant bakery in town. Best cream bun I've had since I was a girl. Beautiful Xmas shop and lovely gift stores on the main street. Not as flashy as Bowral but still good quality shops and lovely old train station.
Moss Vale is at a junction of roads that allows easy access to other great areas, for instance Bundanoon, Robertson, Berrima, Fitzroy Falls, Kangaroo Valley, Barren Grounds. It has a Coles and an IGA and a number of restaurants and take-aways and an ATM or two. The central area has old buildings and trees and is generally quite pleasant. I recommend Polly's Pies and Pastries, who also do decent coffee.
We've been to The Southern Highlands many times before. We chose Moss Vale mainly for accomodation purposes. As in regards to the town, we prefer Bowral and Berrimah. However, the area is breathtaking. If you enjoy nature, check out Fitzroy Falls, especially if has rained beforehand. The West Walking Track is a 1.5 hr return walk (3.6km). We saw a lyrebird doing its courtship dance and imitating at least 7 different bird sounds. Take a drive in a clear night out to Bundanoon and check out the awe-inspiring starry sky. You'll be lost for words! Even a drive around the different streets in Burradoo in autumn is enjoyable.

I was disappointed to be only staying one night. I had the Parisienne Room which was cosy and very comfortable. The cooked breakfast was perfect. I have no hesitation recommending this hotel.
