I was only passing through on business, but Mechelen has a fantastic historic 16th/17th Century centre with a beautiful town square and surrounding streets. Lots of historic and welcoming bars, restaurants and shops to explore. Well worth a short break.
This is a city that is not well known in the UK, but deserves many more visitors. It has 336 listed buildings, a large cathedral and several historic churches, parks, waterways, museums and a huge number of bars, restaurants and cafes, along with excellent specialist shops. It is also easy to reach, from either Brussels or Antwerp. Find a reason to go (and don't forget the historic Het Anker brewery). The Toy Museum is fun too
Lovely medieval city with very conscious community building. An inspiration on how to live in multicultural harmony. Excellent restaurants, nice central square for people watching, very friendly and safe.
Mechelen is a very nice medieval town with much character. It offers a lot to fanilies, from strolling to the Bruul and Ijzerenleen (Iron bannister avenue), visiting the little shops to the Grand Place, enjoying a Hasselt Coffee. For the kids there is the discovery of Technopolis, where they can experiment with so many things. A visit to the St-Rombouts Cathedral and the Basilic of OLV Hanswijck is a must.
The Old Town area was nice to walk through in the evening for dinner and a coffee house. The railroad museum was excellent. Our hotel was in an excellent location. The Italian restaurant we went to for dinner didn't fully have a true Italian tastes to the dishes.
I visit Mechelen often from England and it is a great place to visit with a vibrant culture, series of events, a large Saturday market on the Grand Place and Ijzerenleen, Town Hall, St Rombouts Catherdral and the beautiful canals, one of which has a long walkway floating on the canal (next to the Fish Market). The Fish market area tends to be the entertainment centre with frequent open air concerts. Once you park at your accommodation, walking or cycling around the centre is advised due to the extensive and confusing one way street system. The restaurants around the Grand Place are good with lots of outdoor seating. Do visit the cathedral, listen to the carillon and if fit, go to the top of the tower for outstanding views. Do use Mechelen as a base to visit Antwerp and Bruxelles by train. If you are travelling with children, a visit to Planckendael is advised.

I have to admit that I normally don't rate my accommodations at booking.com but in this case I just have to do it as my stay there was just exceptionally perfect. Frankly the start was not perfect as I was just not able to find the hotel - it rather looks like the carpark of a private house. Once I found it I couldn't find the entrance as the door pretty much looks like a wall. So this could have been better. BUT we I experienced afterwards was unique and absolutely amazing. Super friendly staff, exceptional facilities, unbelievable pool, super spacy room. I mean everything was just so high, high, high end it was unbelievable. Location is a bit of somewhere in nowhere but in case you need a hotel in nowhere you just have to get a room there. I'm still a bit stoked.
