Small town full of historic landmarks, and where you can really get a sense of how the locals live (you can't even find menus in English, which is great if you like going off the beaten path). The construction and architecture are very old, but well-kept and wonderful to admire. Highly recommend visiting the Cathedral, and even going up its 500 steps (for the view up top and for the carillon of ancient bells). The local brewery - Het Anker - must be booked weeks in advance (I missed my chance), but the beer Carole was divine. The Saturday market in the center is worth visiting, with lots of food options. You can also do a lot of shopping in the streets, and dine out in adorable local restaurants (I really liked a Greek one named Zorba).
Located part way between Antwerp or Brussels, it is a good alternative to staying in those cities, especially if you prefer somewhere slightly quieter. It is an attractive town, and the cathedral and Grote Markt are especially fine. Bus and train links are very good, and the town is easy to walk round as the centre is mostly free of motor traffic. There is a good selection of bars and cafes, and there was the unexpected option of a boat trip on the River Dijle.
Mechelen is a beautiful old Belgian city with an impressive marketsquare and a lot of monumental buildings. Because Mechelen's city center is not that big it's very easy to get around by foot. If you have a chance, visit city brewery Het Anker. It's a really nice guided tour of one of the most beautiful, old (and still operating) breweries I've ever visited. And if you're looking for a diverse selection of foods I would recommend paying a visit to the Vleeshalle foodcourt.
The main market square is fabulous as are several of the smaller areas. there are wonderful coffee/cake shops almost everywhere in the centre. The cathedral is definitely worth a visit as are a number of smaller churches. It has a wonderful shopping centre. A walk by the river is a must.
It's a small town with the heart of city. You get everything you get in a small city but you get it in a smaller place with beautiful architecture. It's not too far from our home and we love going there, even if just for a walk.
The town seems to be very inclusive and I cannot get over the cyclist on the morning. Mum's take their kids, using specially designed to carry up to 3 children. Kids as young as 4 cycle allong narrow roads with a parent and the car drivers drive bery cosideratly and with care. Try that in IRL where rather little care and considerstion os given to cyclist. The architecture of the old town centre is something else and to behold. Compared to Frankfurt am Main - where I jave stayed for a longer period - I find the hotels here are quite more expensive. Mechelen is certainly worthy a visit. You will enjoy it.
The hotel was nicely located in a very central area. It was very good that everything was reachable by foot. There is a supermarket nearby and also some good options for lunch and dinner. The breakfast was just awesome: a large variety and good quality of products. They offered normal, plant-based and gluten-free options. Much better than expected on this matter. A nice element was to have the option of a late check-out at 2 pm. I worked perfectly.
Mechelen
Serge is a very kind host that takes great care of his guests. Lunatree is in the heart of Mechelen, and everything is easily reachable by foot. Addedd value is that the hotel is inside a typical belgian house, which I think is an additional reason to book a room at Lunatreee.
Excellent boutique hotel. Felt very new and clean. Incredible few of church across street through floor to ceiling windows especially at night when it was lit up. It was also a pretty close walk (10min) to train station and easy to get to.
Excellent location in the middle of town. Super ambience throughout the hotel. Comfortable room/bathroom. Nespresso machine in room. Underground car park although VERY tight !
Great location of the hotel, good food and service at the restaurant, very friendly and helpful personnel. Overall very positive impression from the hotel! Highly recommended!
