Jasper is a much more quiet option than Banff, unfortunately this means fewer restaurants and they often closed early. Fortunately this also means that trails were less packed which means you could take you time and you didn’t have to wait for tourists to get a clear picture.
Cute little town. Perfect as a base. Easy to get to (we drove from Edmonton). Lots of great restaurants and cute shops. Amazing sites in close proximity. I really enjoyed my time in Jasper (provincial park).
We had a really long drive as there was an big acccident and Icefield parkway was closed. No infornation was given. Our phone was not usable. Had to go back to the lone restaurant/logde to make phone-call. There was a long line. Lodge has no room available, but dinner served after hour wait. Finally arrived at the hotel after midnight. Had a nice hiking and enjoyed downtown.
Jasper and all National Parks, wildlife was great. We didn’t stay as long as we wanted to, due to the weather, it snowed, cold temperatures and hiking on slippery trails wasn’t an option at our age.
Must do’s : - maligne canyons 6 bridge hike - hike around moose lake near maligne lake ( high probability of seeing moose there) - bow lake - icefield parkway drive ( big chance of wildlife spotting there) Tourist trap: - maligne lake boat cruise
Hiking in Jasper. Why else would you go there? As we went in early June trail conditions were still on a day to day basis. We didn't manage to hike every trail we wanted to. Some were still snowbound, others closed due to grizzly activity. The hikes we did do, however, were absolutely gorgeous and a lot of fun (We did the Oval Hills Loop, the Mina-Riley Lakes Loop, the Big Bend and a number of hikes we put together just for ourselves). The Bear Paw Bakery provided us with the necessary food for our trips: The Delicious Sandwiches and Insanely Good Cinnamon Buns we bought there are among the best food we had during our whole time in Canada. Accomodation wise Jasper was ok for the two days we visited, even though it was pretty expensive. So, if we went again, we would probably go backpacking and camping and save some money for many more Cinnamon Buns...

Great location in Jasper especially for for winter. Great view of the mountains and the hotel offers access to lots of winter activities - there's an ice hockey rink and ice skating tracks on the frozen lake, fat bicycle rentals etc. In my opinion the ice skating rink/path on Pyramid Lake is better than any other in Jasper as it feels like you are right next to the mountains!
