Hotel in Daoli, Harbin
Mercure Harbin Sofia Church is located a 5-minute walk from Central Avenue and a 15-minute walk from Songhua River. It features modern rooms equipped with a flat-screen TV providing cable channels. I had a great stay, check in was easy and the staff has always been polite and helpful (booked me a taxi for a very early morning flight). The room is amazing, great bed, super comfortable, big TV with some international movies available for free. There is even an air purifier in the room which I particularly appreciated. The hotel is really well located, walking distance from most sites of interest in the city and the riverside, and if you want to explore further, you can use shared bikes, buses or taxis that are everywhere in the center. Breakfast was very varied and served until late enough (10am).

The beds were comfortable and I was able to cool the room down, by opening the window! The hotel was close to all the sites I wanted to see in my 2 days here. They even worked it out with us to keep 1 room until 5pm, so we could have a place to rest before heading to the airport at 5pm, for a small fee.

It's a really easygoing city, with lots to do if you are curious to explore. The city center is obviously pretty and a mixture of architectural influences which is really nice for walking around. I enjoyed visiting the Siberian tigers park, really something special. If you stay long enough, you can also make it to Unit 731 for a bit of history. I really recommend spending a couple of hours to see the museum and the historic site. Walking around in the city center, taking photos and stopping for snacks, ice cream or a Harbin beer is already in itself a cool activity to do. It's an easy city to travel around but if you want to cross the river, you have to navigate the Chinese ways to commute (Didi, buses, shared bikes). One major problems : there are way too many cars in that place. Everywhere, even on sidewalks.
Great place to tick off the bucket list. Wonderful to see the city and all the sites covered in a blanket of snow. 3 days is probably enough in the city if you aren't going out to the ski resorts, however there is definitely more than meets the eye with this city!
It was cold but with layering you can manage. You can buy anything from shoes to coats in Beijing (Silk Market) for a fraction of what can be purchased in Australia and possibly better suited to the conditions. Would recommend you wait. We also had concerns about transportation and waiting for taxis etc. Shouldn't have worried taxis were abundant and hostel able to arrange transportation and entrance tickets to anything you need on arrival if at all concerned. We spent 3 days/nights and were able to see Snow and Ice, Sun Island, Tiger Park, 727 Museum and Zhoaling park and well as walk about the ice park on the river. Ate at local restuarants away from Central street, night markts and local street food. All good.
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The main purpose was to visit the snow carvings at Sun Island as well as the Ice sculptures. They were lit up when the sky grew dark. Truly breath-taking and memorable! Chao Yang Street was also lit up. The airport was under renovation and hopefully when we next visit, the experience would be much better upon arrival. Somewhat surprised that after we boarded taxi, others could also share the ride! We still had to pay for the full fare even though taxi was shared. Expect your taxi ride to be longer because of the constant traffic jam.
Very beautiful city, full of foreign influence. This melange makes it so attractive to the eye. You get lots of art neauveau and art deco architecture, Russian influence with St Sophia church (now under renovation, unfortunately nothing much remained from the original decor of the place inside), Zhongyang and Gogol Streets with their beautifully restored buildings on both sides, the Zhaolin Park with its ice sculptures (to be visited in the evening when they are lit up - all of it for free). There is also Sun and Ice Festival on Sun Island (you can get there in a cable car 80 rmb both ways, or simply cross the frozen river if you have more time) where you can see snow statues sometimes as big as a 6-storey building - 260 rmb. Some go to the tiger park - I haven't done that. Since you have to eat, I'd recommend a Russian restaurant out there. Myself I went to a historical place called Tatoc in Zhongyang, good food, stylish. What's not to like? Just dress yourself for the occession - a ski mask and feet warmers if going there in winter.
We were there during the mid winter. The temperature went down to -28C! It is icy and snowy, and such a beautiful city. We like the Polar land in particular. Seeing so many cute polar animals is really a great experience for some one who came from a tropical country like me. The Ice and Snow World was exceptional and excellent too.
The staff was absolutely amazing. Friendly and so helpful to accommodate us especially want to thank Alan Wang and Charly Xu for helping me and my friends specifically spending a while trying to get us rooms on the same floor. Thank you! The hotel had great view and not far from the ice festival area if you take a taxi. This is the perfect hotel for our stay.
- The room was to hot to sleep and no way to turn down the Aircon even with 16 degree on AC it felt like 40degrees plus and no cold air so last option besides the floor sleep option - only a wet cold towel on me could make me felt a little sleep:) +Room otherwise good +Service good +Stuff great and nice +Airport bus line 4 stop directly at the door

Clean, tidy hotel with helpful and flexible staff. Allowed us to check-in early when we arrived, and reception was happy to hold a package delivered for us in advance. Buffet breakfast (mainly Chinese food) at a reasonable price.
Very helpful staff especially one called Hannah that could communicate fluently in English and went above and beyond to ensure I had a pleasant stay not only in the hotel but Harbin itself.
Very new and clean hotel, with reception staff speaking English
