Relatively small city with a good pedestrian area and some great eating options, try Cubo Negro, brilliant. Some small but worthwhile museums and attractions. You could see it all in a day or two. But worth staying longer to relax in this relaxed attractive town. There is a history worth exploring. Not the place if you want river cruising and castles but not far away. Good place to stay as an alternative to Frankfurt if you are on business or need to stay near the airport.
I have only been to Mainz sparingly because I use this town as a great place to stay the night before I fly out of Frankfurt airport. Can’t beat the atmosphere of the Rhein River. Very relaxing town.
People in the city of Mainz are friendly & open people. From the railway, hotel & football club staff to the average person on the street, they Re pretty relaxed folk. Only there for the football match, but got a great vibe for the city.
Mainz is an attractive city, a university town with a long and interesting history, in particular through its Roman origins and its links to Johannes Gutenberg. It also has an extensive old town and cathedral and a large and lively market where locals love to have their 'Marktfrühstück' (market breakfast) at one of the numerous stalls on a Saturday. Due to its situation Mainz has its own pleasant microclimate with long hot summers and cool dry winters. It is Germany's wine capital and there are many festivals all year round, starting with Fastnacht (carnival) in February, midsummer night (Johannisnacht) in June, the wine festival at the end of August/early September and a very nice Christmas market. In summer, Mainz also boasts its own 'beach' along the Rhine. Transport connections are very good to close-by towns such as Wiesbaden and Frankfurt as well as Darmstadt, Heidelberg, or Mannheim. Trips on the Rhine by boat are highly recommended to see many of the castles along the Rhine, the famous wine-town Rüdesheim or the Loreley rock. This is wine country, so in many of the small, surrounding towns wine-tastings and accompanying food are offered in local vineyards, often in their courtyards, in early autumn. The countryside around Mainz is very varied offering forests and fields as well as vineyards for extensive hikes. There are also the Lenneberg Forest and the nature reserve 'Großer Sand' just outside Mainz and, of course, the Rhine promenade leading up to the large 'Mainzer Volkspark' and rose garden. Finally, there are many affordable restaurants, some of them offering a special lunch-time menu, and in autumn a local speciality is 'Federweißen und Zwiebelkuchen', young wine which has just fermented, and onion tart, which you can both enjoy at stalls located around town from September to October.
Beautiful city! I really liked the river side and the nice city center. Mainz has lots of places to have a nice walk and to relax. It is really easy to go from place to place by foot and the tourist points are not that far from each other (26 walk tops).
Mainz is a beautifully restored German town. Lots of history. Medieval town centre has lots of historical buildings, small shops, street entertainment, coffee shops, bars, restaurants ... The cathedral is definitively worth to explore. If you have time take a boat trip!
This was a return trip only a month after our first visit. We love the location, enjoying breakfast overlooking the Rhein, walking distance from so many interesting sights, and the friendly, first-class everything that goes with Hyatt Regency. The location is walking distance from the Mainz Cathedral, Market Square, Gutenberg Museum, Roman Ruins, and exquisite Marc Chagall stained glass windows at St. Stephens Church, not to mention the great walking/biking/running paths along the Rhein.
Altstadt, Mainz
We stayed in the "Berlin" suite, which was spacious, clean, and well-equipped for our family of 4; it was like a home away from home. The location is tough to beat, right in the center of Mainz off Schillerplatz. The host was super friendly and responsive. Each room had a fan, which can be quite important during the summer months! We are glad that the place was available and would certainly recommend it!
A modern hotel close to the railway station in Mainz. It is a budget accommodation but rooms are clean and cosy and they have all one needs for a pleasant stay. The hotel is on the other side of the railway station than the town but it is some 5 minutes walk. There are shops and restaurants in the railway station itself. The town centre can be reach by walk (15 minutes) or by bus/tram (5 minutes).
Staff friendly and helpful even though they must have been under stress of closing for Covid-19. Hotel is in a great location: center within a walking distance, nice neighborhood, italian restaurant attached to the hotel, bakery, groceries shop nearby. Room and bathroom were quite big, beds not super soft, but we had a good night's sleep. Would definitely stay again 🙂
# I arrived early morning around 11:00am , but confirmed check-in. It'was so nice and lucky. # Staffs are very helpful and kind. # Nice breakfast. I've enjoyed it ; ) # Room conditions are clean and bed is also cozy/comfort to me. # Hotel is near from Mainz Romisches Theater station(very close) also, it's easy to access to old town.
Staff were exceptionally helpful and welcoming. I was visiting Mainz for a family christening and travelling with my elderly mother. The staff could not have been more accommodating. The rooms were spacious and extremely clean. The hotel restaurant has a wonderful terrace overlooking the city and the food at lunch was superb (and reasonably priced!).
everything in this hotel go so easy.... staff smiling... check in check out simple....room and bed perfect... pillows great.... I have been in many many many hotels ... but this one to me had left amazing impression .... Hotel has a good good vibe, when im in Mainz that will be my location 👍
The house was spacious and with a beautiful garden. The hosts were incredibly helpful and flexible as we were arriving very late at night. Great location only a few minutes from bus connections with about a 10 minute journey into central Mainz. Would definitely recommend for families.
The hotel was close enough to walk to the main station. They provided us two baby cribs, that was so kind of them and made our night so much easier. The breakfast was one of the best we ever had at hotel! So freash and delicious, we thought we were getting more than we paid. Thank you!
Centrally located, within 5 minutes from the main train station. All the staff at hotel were very helpful & courteous. We booked a Comfort room which was quite large with a huge window looking out on to the street. Bathroom was also big and both rooms were kept very clean.
Staff managed the property well, especially the meals (there are 3 restaurants at the hotel). The park location is excellent and centre Ville is only 20 min walk away & downhill (of course this means going back is uphill but one needs a little exercise after lunch anyway:)
Altstadt, Mainz
The apartment was super clean. The host was super friendly and helpful. The apartment is really close to the old town and public transport. There was a water cattle, tea, coffee machine with coffee and even some water in the fridge. Had a really good time in Mainz

It's a wonderful apartment studio in a perfect location for the Christmas Market. I would stay there again if I return to Mainz and will highly recommend it. The gentleman who checked me in was also very friend, efficient. and informative. Kudos all around!
The grounds are lovely and the hotel is in a very good location to walk into the town. Staff are very friendly and helpful and it was a nice surprise that my room had a balcony!
The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Nice location- it is not in the center of the city but the tramway station is just behind the hotel and very convenient.
The hotel was beautiful in a prime location. The breakfast was delicious with good variety. The staff was great, very friendly and very helpful.
Cheap and cheerful hotel in a nice neighbourhood. Local bars and restaurants short walk away with the main town area 15 mins walk.
The hotel is very nice, very high ceilings, everything in good conditions and good breakfast. It’s good located.
