A Grimm Fairytale
Although known for the Nuremberg Trials, this Bavarian city has a stunning medieval core of cobbled streets and half-timbered buildings that wouldn’t look out of place in a fairytale. Sitting above this is the castle, one of the most important in the Holy Roman Empire. Take the steep walk up here for fantastic old town views.
Hauptmarkt square in the old town is home to an unusual-looking church and a Gothic fountain, spectacularly lit during the annual Nuremberg Christmas markets. Selling everything from wooden toys to lebkuchen (gingerbread), these are widely considered the best Christmas markets in Germany.
Other attractions in Nuremberg (Nürnberg in German) include the Germanisches Nationalmuseum, the country’s largest museum of culture and art. Another highlight is the Heilig-Geist-Spital, a medieval hospital by the Pegnitz River.
A word must also be said about its relationship with Nazism. On the south-east corner are the immense Nazi Rally Grounds and Party Congress Hall, built in appropriately domineering fashion. The excellent Documentation Centre here is a sensitive and unbiased portrayal of life under Hitler. It is also possible to visit the courtroom where the war trials were held.
Before leaving your Booking.com apartment, hotel or hostel to go to Nuremberg Airport, don’t forget to try the spicy local sausage!

A wonderfully historic city. We loved walking around the city, especially by the castle. Easy to get around on the underground or trams. There was a wonderful classic music festival on while we were there that we very much enjoyed.

It is made for tourists. The travel guides make it sound complicated but it is simple. There is one road, Konigstrasse, that leads from the station through the old town to the castle. Beautiful city - much of it reconstructed after WWII but some original. It has all been reconstructed very sensitively to try & look as it did & the medieval style buildings are so pretty & we'll cared for with wonderful flower boxes in the summer period. Lovely atmosphere in the old town & great restaurants & bars. Lots of history & culture to explore! Very friendly & welcoming staff in restaurants.

You can 'do' Nurnberg in a couple of days, in my view. We only had an overnight stop, never enough to do justice tor anywhere, but by taking a sightseers' tour we got the gist then had a good meal in the evening. It's worth noting the city was 90 per cent obliterated by bombing during the war so a lot of what you see is reconstruction.NickUnited Kingdom
