The Moorish Watchtower
Almería lies on the Mediterranean coast of Andalusía, overlooked by the old Moorish citadel or ‘Alcazaba’. It was founded in the mid-10th century by the Caliph of Cordoba, and was named ‘Al-Mariy-yat’ or ‘the watchtower’, as it was part of the coastal defences of the Caliphate. After internal divisions in the Caliphate and Christian crusades, the city finally surrendered to the Catholic monarchs a few years before the first trip of Columbus. The Cathedral of St Mary of the Incarnation was originally a mosque, and was built resembling a fortress, in order to offer resistance to pirates.
