The city itself is nothing exceptional (nice church, pleasant swimming area at the river) but it is great base for sightseeing in this area as it is the middle of the region with plenty of natural mitacles, ruins and intetesting places. Rioseco Abbey and Puentedey (absolute "must see" in Northern Spain) are 15 minutes by car

We arrived in the throes of local fiestas so the place was...

We arrived in the throes of local fiestas so the place was crowded and lively. The town itself is not pretty, except for the small, older part around the town square. We went for a drink in the pretty garden of Restaurante Plati and dined well in Meson Don Nuño. 50 EUR for two with a botle of wine included.

Villarcayo has limited appeal in itself but an easy size...

Villarcayo has limited appeal in itself but an easy size with local shops bars restaurants and garage with low priced fuel. However, it is convenient base for touring into the Cantabrian mountains, northern Spain and Euskadi (Basque) areas.

Located close to the Via Verde and very cycle friendly. Lovely greeting from Lara who made us feel so very welcome. We were in the pool 10 minutes after arriving. The rooms were comfortable with super bathrooms. Breakfast was ample and Lara & Victor were great in helping with a food allergy. We were travelling by bike but the hotel does cycle hire and it would make a great place for a days (or longer) cycling adventure

The hotel sends us back to an earlier time: crisp cotton sheets, the smell of cologne in passageways, a writing desk in the room...there is a large indoor pool which came in handy, and for those who like cycling there is an ebike rental attached to the hotel, which is a fabulous way of getting around the Merindades area.

Excellent night at Hotel Dona Jimena. This was a last minute booking for us as we were passing through on a motorcycle tour of Spain and Portugal. The accommodation had everything we needed for a great night's stay. Would recommend
