Everything was exceptional. The bed was so comfortable and the facilities were spotless. We arrived on bicycle via the Camino Natural Trail that is near the hotel and they stored our bikes in the garage which is this amazing cycle-rental center with beautifully maintained e-bikes.

The city itself is nothing exceptional (nice church, pleasant swimming area at the river) but it is great base for sightseeing in this area as it is the middle of the region with plenty of natural mitacles, ruins and intetesting places. Rioseco Abbey and Puentedey (absolute "must see" in Northern Spain) are 15 minutes by car

We arrived in the throes of local fiestas so the place was crowded and lively. The town itself is not pretty, except for the small, older part around the town square. We went for a drink in the pretty garden of Restaurante Plati and dined well in Meson Don Nuño. 50 EUR for two with a botle of wine included.

Villarcayo has limited appeal in itself but an easy size...

Villarcayo has limited appeal in itself but an easy size with local shops bars restaurants and garage with low priced fuel. However, it is convenient base for touring into the Cantabrian mountains, northern Spain and Euskadi (Basque) areas.

This is a very nice guest house cum hotel with really welcoming hosts. We were offered use of their EV charger (but declined as we didn't need to charge) and also given a full explanation of everything we might want to see in the local area. It's about half a mile outside Villarcayo, meaning a nice straight walk to and from a bar. Breakfast was extra, but it turned out to be good value for €7.50 each. The room was comfortable, parking plentiful.

The hotel sends us back to an earlier time: crisp cotton sheets, the smell of cologne in passageways, a writing desk in the room...there is a large indoor pool which came in handy, and for those who like cycling there is an ebike rental attached to the hotel, which is a fabulous way of getting around the Merindades area.
