We recently stayed at the Hotel Cardinal for 5 nights in February 2025. Our stay was excellent, a 10 out of 10. There are so many positives to say about the Hotel Cardinal. First, the location is so good, right behind the Cathedrale St-Andre. But don't worry, the sound of the bells from the tower on the other side don't really bother you. The hotel is steps away from the historic L'Hotel de ville, and a 2 minute walk from the Musee des Beaux Arts. It is very easy to walk from the hotel to many other beautiful and historic sights, and shopping. The tram lines also stop by the cathedrale. The hotel itself, like so much of the old city center, is a very old building that is beautifully restored on the inside. Our sleeping room was a very good size, with a small kitchen, which came in handy. The room was super clean and quiet and intimate. I believe there are only 10 rooms in the Hotel Cardinal. Each room has a name, not a number. The staff is truly extraordinary. In our experience Axel and Bastien were also ready to help us with anything we needed: extra towels, directions to anywhere we wanted to go, arranging a taxi, even getting toast for my wife when she wasn't feeling well. Things you might want to know: Ask the hotel to call a taxi if you need one. We used a taxi to go to the train station (20 Euros) so we didn't have to change tram lines with our bags. If you take an uber, you should know that ubers are not allowed on the small street in front of the hotel, but taxis are allowed. The hotel has a breakfast for extra cost, which we did not have. There is no restaurant in the hotel, but that doesn't matter because there are so many other places just steps away from the front door. Summary: My wife and I highly recommend the Hotel Cardinal for many reasons, its location, its beautiful condition with very good sized rooms, The hotel is very small and quiet and charming. The staff is superior, always with such excellent attention paid.

It is a very clean hotel, which I appreciated a lot as a person who’s quite picky in terms of cleanliness. The room and the hotel overall were quite spacious especially in comparison to Paris hotels :) The staff were very helpful and friendly. The location is simply amazing, very close to major attractions. Thank you very much for a great stay :)

The staff is super friendly, both at the reception/front desk as were the bar gentlemen. On our first night we came in later than expected, and were super hungry from a long day of traveling. The lady at the reception called a local French restaurant and reserved a table for us to go have dinner. We felt very welcomed. The restaurant was only 5 min away. They also helped us book a wine tour and guided trip to Saint Emilion the following day, so super helpful. The Hotel facility is top notch: very clean, tidy, excellent toiletries, towels with really good smells. Our room was more spacious than I had envisioned from the pictures. The bed very comfortable, bathroom also very spacious. One should not be put off by the sight of the building from outside, as the facility inside is very modern. The restaurant served breakfast in a beautiful room inside and an esplanade out the backyard. It also has an elegant bar which serves drinks and light snacks which we were happy to enjoy. There is also a rooftop to enjoy with access request from the reception. The hotel is easily center accessible, on a light 10 min walk to it. The area felt also safe, as me and my friend made all the commute to the center on foot and some nights we walked back very late at night. It is definitely worth a short, mid or long stay in lovely Bordeaux.

FAQs about hotels in Bordeaux

A Taste to Suit Everyone’s Palette

Raise your wine glass and toast the beautiful city of Bordeaux on the banks of the Garonne River. Having produced wine since the 8th century, it’s fair to say the second largest wine producer in the world is worth the trip for the vin alone. The city itself has spread outwards, rather than upwards, and the result is a very pretty town center, filled with stone mansions and terraced housing comparable to Paris.

Cultured Bordeaux is filled with museums such as the Museum of Contemporary Art and Musee D'Aquitaine. The streets provide an equally interesting exhibition of fine architecture including the Victory Arch and the Aquitaine Bridge. On the shores of the river lies the Les Chartrons district, which is a blend of ferry boat rides, picturesque views and buzzing nightlife while the bars and cafes in the La Victoire district are frequented by students.

A tour of the famous vineyards is probably on the itinerary and this can be accomplished by visiting the wineries and châteaux privately or as part of a tour. You can also worship the wine gods at the Bordeaux Wine Festival held during the summer.

Visitors can easily make the short trip to the heart of Bordeaux from the Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport. With 70 hotels and bed & breakfasts available, Booking.com allows you to discover the vibrant and friendly heart of the vineyard region.

A lovely city - it looks beige or golden as it was renovated some time ago. Consequently, we can admire harmonious, historical architecture, blended with many modern buildings. I stayed next to the riverbank, which is a great public space to spend leisure time.

I spent five days in the city, assuming I would need day...

I spent five days in the city, assuming I would need day trips to see wine towns such as Saint-Emilion and Pauillac. I think the city itself could be done in a day plus however much time needed for side trips. That said, you can always add more days to have time to eat and drink more. I have never been a fan of French cuisine but this trip showed me how I have been underrating it for years. I enjoy mixing it up -- eating at nicer places and eating at markets -- and in both places, I ate very well. I highly recommend heading over the Marché des Capucins and eating at one of the many stalls there. Of course you can´t reference Bordeaux without speaking about wine. While of course you can buy wine anywhere, there is something to be said about consuming it in the area where it is made. For one thing, there is a wide variety of wine on offer in all price ranges. And of course, most people in the service industry are knowledgeable about wine. Be prepared to walk, as that is of course the best way to get to know an older European city. Bring comfortable walking shoes because as I always say, cobblestones are beautiful but torture.

Bordeaux is a beautiful city, 3 days is probably too short if you take a day to explore the wine regions fx. St. Emilion etc. I would consider 5 days to see everything at a good pace. The city is large and even taking the bus or tram doesnt really save you much time.

Lovely city, with plenty to see and do, it is being modernised on the outskirts and the tram system is having work done but it didn't detract from the ease of getting around to see many of the attractions. The restaurant choices were vastly numerous and we found everywhere we chose to have a great choice and of good value.

Nice little kitchenette with dishwasher and fridge. Massive supermarket in adjacent Meriadeck shopping centre. Superb boulangerie across from hotel with the best bread snd croissants. We have stayed here 3 times now, as a short stopover on the way to or from southern France or Spain. The tram from the train station takes you to within 5 mins walk of the hotel - which is located in a pleasant pedestrian area and close to many restaurants and bars. The rooms are fine, beds firm but comfortable and the rooms we have had have all been very quiet. Staff very professional and welcoming.
