I've visited a lot of resorts and believe Alpe d'Huez is the most convenient for easy access to the slopes and has the best combination of varied pistes and off-piste skiing. It suits all ability levels. Groups with non-skiers would probably prefer a more traditional resort as the beauty of the area is more obvious when out on the slopes - especially the off-piste. There is a good selection of bars and restaurants and the bus service is free with a lift pass. We stayed in an apartment complex with a pool and sauna. But the resort does have an outdoor and indoor swimming pool as well as an ice rink. If you're unlucky enough to have an accident skiing then I can personally testify to the efficiency of the pisteurs and helicopter rescue service. It was 1,003 Euros to be airlifted from the bottom of the Sarenne. So, insurance is a must!
Will definitrly revisit this resort with a group of friends as there is a good party atmosphere in the mountains . Smithy’s is a great restaurant in the village run by English, Mexican style food. Signal bar was the best restaurant on the mountain as well as Folie Douce.
Great ski resort, particularly for beginners as lots of green and blue runs. Access to surrounding villages was good and added variety to your runs. Great restaurants and not too expensive compared with other resorts. Lots of ski hire places and ski schools.
Slopes are graded differently to elsewhere. The green runs were more like blue, and the blues like reds. Moguls formed on all steep sections by midday, I'm not sure of this was because of the volume of people skiing during half term week, or if it is always like this. If you cant ski moguls, go elsewhere ! Plenty of lifts to choose from and queues were not too bad. However, not an extensive ski area if you're sating for a week. Book evening meals in advance as the restaurants can get busy. Expect to pay between 20 - 30 euros per main dish. However there's a Thai takeaway a pizza takeaway and a burger bar which does amazingly tasty, huge burgers.
Alpe du Huez is a high quality medium sized French resort. Lots of excellent ski-ing and facilities. If you are the kind of skier who never wants to ski the same run twice over the course of a week then Alpe du Huez is probably not for you, but it's a much friendlier and easy going place than the more agressive mega resorts. And fewer emarassing posh sounding British people.
Good ski resort, if you have good weather and snow. Study the trail maps, there are plenty of good trails distributed through al the mountain and villages. 2.5 days is not enough to explore it all. Great restaurants and bars everywhere.
