Many families visiting L'Alpe-d'Huez loved staying at Hôtel Daria-I Nor by Les Etincelles, Hotel Au Chamois d'Or, and Le Castillan.
Great hotel, very accommodating for a large group, gave us rooms beside each other which was very convenient. The rooms were great, comfy beds and kept very clean. The breakfast was just what you need for a good feed before hitting the slopes for the day. Only downside was the walk to the slopes, about 5-10 minutes so not exactly ski in ski out but other than that I would highly recommend. Friendly staff, great rooms, good value for money!
L Alpe-D'Huez is a fabulous south facing ski resort which caters for all skiers from beginners to advanced. it has the best nursery slopes I have seen (at Bergers) with wide gently sloping runs and lots of green and blue runs throughout the resort. There are also plenty of red and black runs for more advanced skiers including The Tunnel (the most challenging black run) and the 16km long black Sarenne - the longest black run in the Alps. For those having a rest for skiing (or injured!) there is a beautiful outdoor pool heated to 27 degrees plus plenty of restaurants in both the town and at the lifts - all with a great atmosphere.
I've visited a lot of resorts and believe Alpe d'Huez is the most convenient for easy access to the slopes and has the best combination of varied pistes and off-piste skiing. It suits all ability levels. Groups with non-skiers would probably prefer a more traditional resort as the beauty of the area is more obvious when out on the slopes - especially the off-piste. There is a good selection of bars and restaurants and the bus service is free with a lift pass. We stayed in an apartment complex with a pool and sauna. But the resort does have an outdoor and indoor swimming pool as well as an ice rink. If you're unlucky enough to have an accident skiing then I can personally testify to the efficiency of the pisteurs and helicopter rescue service. It was 1,003 Euros to be airlifted from the bottom of the Sarenne. So, insurance is a must!
Will definitrly revisit this resort with a group of friends as there is a good party atmosphere in the mountains . Smithy’s is a great restaurant in the village run by English, Mexican style food. Signal bar was the best restaurant on the mountain as well as Folie Douce.
Great ski resort, particularly for beginners as lots of green and blue runs. Access to surrounding villages was good and added variety to your runs. Great restaurants and not too expensive compared with other resorts. Lots of ski hire places and ski schools.
Slopes are graded differently to elsewhere. The green runs were more like blue, and the blues like reds. Moguls formed on all steep sections by midday, I'm not sure of this was because of the volume of people skiing during half term week, or if it is always like this. If you cant ski moguls, go elsewhere ! Plenty of lifts to choose from and queues were not too bad. However, not an extensive ski area if you're sating for a week. Book evening meals in advance as the restaurants can get busy. Expect to pay between 20 - 30 euros per main dish. However there's a Thai takeaway a pizza takeaway and a burger bar which does amazingly tasty, huge burgers.
L'Alpe-d'Huez
Rooms were great, heated outdoor pool was a bonus, quiet and comfortable apartment. However, the Wifi in the room was slow and not up to much. I asked the hotel to check, and they said this was the standard in all rooms. Only one person could log on and was temperamental, couldn't stream any music or video. Just about good enough to check email but frustrating, so bear this in mind if you need good connectivity whilst on holiday.
The hotel and staff were very strict about corona rules, which is very good! We appreciate that! There are sanitizers /disinfection facilities everywhere, and the hotel staff were serious about the QR code and mouth masks. The hotel room was super clean and comfortable! Great view of the mountains and good location just next to the public parking area. Hotel staff were polite and helpful. They speak English very well.
The best part was the views from our room balcony and the restaurant. The hotel was not too close to the Bergers lifts but the town had free shuttle access which was very convenient. Lots of restaurants close by. Staff were friendly, cheerful, and helpful. They gave us some enegry bars and chocolates for free when I was low on sugar late night. Thank you!
We stayed here one night at the end of a week long cycling tour. The location is excellent for cyclists, as it's right across from the official Tour de France stage finish. It's a basic hotel that could use some attention, but works fine for its price range and location. Very nice view.
