Alpe D Huez is a nice town. Ski access is good. Plenty of nice runs back to town for all levels of ability. Good height at 1800m up to 3300m means more snow sure than some resorts. Outdoor swimming pool and ice rink in centre. Good options for food and drink around town and on the mountain.
This is a good ski resort but affected by limited snow of some of the lower and main pistes, which become difficult by mid-afternoon. Still lots of piste to ski There’s a few good bars and lots of decent restaurants. La Folie Douce is always extremely lively and busy.
L Alpe-D'Huez is a fabulous south facing ski resort which caters for all skiers from beginners to advanced. it has the best nursery slopes I have seen (at Bergers) with wide gently sloping runs and lots of green and blue runs throughout the resort. There are also plenty of red and black runs for more advanced skiers including The Tunnel (the most challenging black run) and the 16km long black Sarenne - the longest black run in the Alps. For those having a rest for skiing (or injured!) there is a beautiful outdoor pool heated to 27 degrees plus plenty of restaurants in both the town and at the lifts - all with a great atmosphere.
I've visited a lot of resorts and believe Alpe d'Huez is the most convenient for easy access to the slopes and has the best combination of varied pistes and off-piste skiing. It suits all ability levels. Groups with non-skiers would probably prefer a more traditional resort as the beauty of the area is more obvious when out on the slopes - especially the off-piste. There is a good selection of bars and restaurants and the bus service is free with a lift pass. We stayed in an apartment complex with a pool and sauna. But the resort does have an outdoor and indoor swimming pool as well as an ice rink. If you're unlucky enough to have an accident skiing then I can personally testify to the efficiency of the pisteurs and helicopter rescue service. It was 1,003 Euros to be airlifted from the bottom of the Sarenne. So, insurance is a must!
Will definitrly revisit this resort with a group of friends as there is a good party atmosphere in the mountains . Smithy’s is a great restaurant in the village run by English, Mexican style food. Signal bar was the best restaurant on the mountain as well as Folie Douce.
Great ski resort, particularly for beginners as lots of green and blue runs. Access to surrounding villages was good and added variety to your runs. Great restaurants and not too expensive compared with other resorts. Lots of ski hire places and ski schools.
We stayed here one night at the end of a week long cycling tour. The location is excellent for cyclists, as it's right across from the official Tour de France stage finish. It's a basic hotel that could use some attention, but works fine for its price range and location. Very nice view.
L'Alpe-d'Huez
THE JACUZZI DIDNT WORK WHEN WE ARRIVED! they said there is a problem, but Booking refund me around 15% for that. This is not a premium hotel, dont expect too much. its really really worth the money thou. Food was very good (for the price!), but not perfect obviously.. it was super cheap
The hotel is very modern and stylish design. The breakfast room and buffet station is fantastic, the choice of foods was excellent. The pool is very nice, and good to have the dressing gowns and slippers in the room to use. Bed was really big and comfortable.
