Marseille has many interesting and beautiful quarter, and a wonderful museum of Greek and Egyptian archaeology, one of our main reasons for the visit. But, especially at night, the town can have a sinister feel. I very nearly had my computer stolen from my backpack as we walked from the station, and Marseille is not a place where you feel it is safe to carry round your passport. Even the central areas of the town are disfigured by graffiti. On the other extreme, you can walk through a city of French grandeur, see the monuments, and stroll and shop on the significant and renovated quai. Been there now 2 times with 5 years in between, and the extremes only became more entrenched.
