FAQs about hotels in Birmingham

Top-Class Shopping, Culture and Sport

The UK's 2nd largest city, Birmingham is one of its top cultural centres. Well-known for the M6 Spaghetti Junction interchange, it is a surprisingly green city with lots of open spaces.

Most city centre hotels in Birmingham are near New Street Station. To the east is the futuristic architecture of the new Bull Ring shopping centre, and just behind is Digbeth Coach Station. To the west is Victoria Square, home of the town hall and a German Christmas Market.

The Mailbox is one of the newest additions to the Birmingham shopping scene, and behind it is one of the canals converging on the Gas Street Basin. By one canal are the ICC (International Convention Centre) and the NIA (National Indoor Arena), both venues that host major events.

Just opposite is Brindleyplace, a canal-front complex of restaurants, bars and hotels near Broad Street – the main nightlife area. It is popular with students at nearby Birmingham University, whose clock tower is modelled on the one in Siena. Just south in Bournville is Cadbury World, and there are several hotels on Hagley Road to the north, which are available on Booking.com.

The city is also known for sports – Aston Villa and Birmingham City are the top football clubs, while Edgbaston Cricket Ground hosts international matches. Other Birmingham attractions include Hockley’s Jewellery Quarter and the NEC arena by Birmingham International Airport.

I came to capture some of the Brutalist buildings spread around the city and got some great ones! The city centre has a moody feel like something is about to happen, but I didn't see any trouble to be fair. I liked my trip to Birmingham. But... Birmingham is one of the noisiest places I've ever been to and on a night its like a city that doesn't sleep. Its peak summer now so I had the windows open and the noise levels outside never stopped. I can sleep through noise ok, but for anyone who cannot I would probably just avoid Birmingham completely 😶

Lovely place to visit.

Lovely place to visit. They have too many homeless people in the town centre a lot sleeping rough, and begging. As a tourist I want to feel safe when I walk back to the Hotel which was central. Oh and they need to do more about the smell of urine which is not pleasant when you’re walking past shop corners under bridges etc. Walking along the canal front was lovely and some lovely places to eat and some nice places to stay.

A vibrant city. Beautiful strolls around the canals. Lots of shopping, good restaurants and bars. Definitely a must is Piccolino Restaurant. Do not miss visiting Grand Central too and the area around the Bullring. Victoria Square is also beautiful. The library is also worth a visit.

We love Birmingham.

We love Birmingham. It has fantastic bars and restaurants and the staff everywhere are so friendly. Broad Street does not feel safe at night but around the Mailbox area and Brindley Place is great. it's busy and buzzy. We like all the shopping here too. Cannot comment on nightclubs as we don't go to them. Theatres are much better value than London and also much nicer as they're smaller with better (more spacious) seating. We would definitely recommend Birmingham for a weekend. Qavali restaurant is incredible if you like Indian food. Tattu is the best Chinese food I've ever eaten.

Birmingham is an open sewer, and has actually managed to get worse in the 40 or so years since I first went there on business. I can honestly say now, that I will NEVER go back. The town centre is a hellhole of closed roads, imaginary road works, abysmal signage, so you never know where you are or where you are going, ever changing speed limits, for no obvious reason other than to fleece motorists for "speeding". The population have always been wankers, and still are. Look what they vote for as a council.

A horrible place that has been left to rot and decay.

A horrible place that has been left to rot and decay. Muslim and other migrant communities appear to have trashed the neighbourhoods and the council have failed to enforce and maintain high standards. In my short time I saw a lot if anti sociak behaviour and very little police presence. I felt in danger on the streets. Junkies and homeless sleeping rough by the train station, canal full of pond weed, litter everywhere, drivers in the Asian area driving recklessly in modified expensive cars and motorbikes. So many abandonned shops and pubs. The bull ring area is ok and the University library area looks nice, other than that I couldn't wait to leave. Too many roads and cars too making getting around the city tricky.

Having heard so much negative feedback from others regarding Britannia hotels, I had lower than averge expectations of this place, but I was pleasantly surprised with the Britannia Birmingham New Street. Room was a good size, bed was comfortable, televsivison was huge, plus free wifi and everything was spotlessly clean. Kettle in the room was also useful. I will definatley stay here again. There was also a spectacular view of the city centre from my hotel window.
