Staying in an actual castle is a really amazing experience, we had use of the Great hall, upstairs bedroom and rooftop. The medieval tower has so much character, loved the spiral stairs. Owners are lovely and we really couldn't have asked for more

Unfortunately the cottage’s beds were completely substandard and very cheap as were the pillows ect. One of the mattresses was clearly stained and had hard bits of plastic on top of a very cheap mattress, which would not look amiss in a hostel.
The main bed is very hard so very uncomfortable to sleep on as mentioned by others, previously in other reviews. The owner when informed about the problems with the mattresses, told the agent he was not prepared to do anything to rectify the situation, which demonstrates a very low level of customer service and unfortunately he now has your money. Had to borrow a mattress from the friend who lives nearby or would have been a truly sleepless, uncomfortable holiday.

The cottage was in nearby New Winton, not Macmerry itself.
The cottage was in nearby New Winton, not Macmerry itself. And despite it being on a main road, it wasn't a particularly busy one and was quiet after dark. The village itself (New Winton) was very small, consisting largely of single storey cottages around a communal green and was accordingly quiet, though it also has its own kids' playground, which our girls loved. It also made a great base from which to explore the many delights of East Lothian; far enough from the A1 to be tranquil, but close enough to make getting around easy. On this visit, we took in Archerfield Walled Gardens & estate, Dirleton, Gullane, Traprain Law, Preston Mill and Smeaton Nursery. Not bad for a weekend!
