I loved this island.
I loved this island. It was so charming and such a slow lifestyle, which is definitely what I needed (and I'm sure a lot of people need on vacation). You could spend hours in the harbor watching boats go by, or take a water taxi to the different beaches around the Island. I didn't get to do it, but I wish I did Harriet's Horses while I was there. It's a small company that takes people throughout the island on horseback. I contacted the woman who ran it, and she was so kind. GO TO THIS ISLAND! Hydra was very busy when we arrived - then we realised a cruise ship had docked and there were thousands on shore. however, they went as fast as they arrived which was great. Hydra was wonderful and no cars! Get info on all the beaches and boat ferries before you go as it can get expensive. Food was great ,souvenir store were overpriced. We went for 2 nights, 3nights would have been perfect. Book July or September , avoid August by all means, all the locals go on vacation and it gets over crowded . August is also high season and priced almost double. Comfortable foot ware a must. You will love the island. Bought our drinks and sat on the bench one night on the cliff watching the waves and sunset.Guest review bymaria - 8.0

We enjoyed our stay on Hydra, but probably stayed one day too long - 3 would have been enough. The beaches are not really close - be prepared for a 30-40 minute walk each way or to pay for a water taxi - little sand, mostly pebbles and largish stones, and little shade, but the water is warm, clear and refreshing when it's hot. ( we were there in August ) would recommend investing in some water shoes. Sunbed hire can be expensive. It was lovely to visit, but to be honest we preferred our stay on Spetses, as it a more chilled and a bit less touristy. Good value for Hydra which can be expensive. Streets are pedestrianised - no cars on Hydra just horses, mules and donkeys for transport. Modernised, affordable boutique-style rooms which are fully equipped. Several restaurants close at hand. Rooms have aircon. Proprieter is extremely helpful. Breakfast at any nearby cafe/restaurant.
