This is a lovely harbor town located in north Snaefellsnes Penninsula. We had a harbor side room in the wonderful Hotel Fransiskus. From the hotel, we walked Sugandisey to the lighthouse for great views and we waked to a delicious dinner at Narfeyrarstofa. Stykkisholmskirkja Church was closed due to remodel. Nearby, we drove to Helgafell and, after reading the saga, we paid the small fee and took the very short hike in hopes of having our wishes granted.
We enjoyed our stay at Hotel Fransiskus. The rooms were clean and beautiful, it was nice to have breakfast included and the location to the harbor and restaurants were great. It is connected to a hospital which surprised us but seems very quiet so did not affect our stay.
Tiny place with typical Iceland coastline - great bird life - and upmarket accommodation and dining options. Be prepared to drive on gravel roads if you want to explore the local area. Ferries and boat trips available.
Quaint little town with friendly people. Best accessed by vehicle. Lots of hikes and areas to site see around the area. Accommodation an restaurants are limited. The food at all three places we tried was superb. Well worth travelling too while touring the snaefellsnes peninsula.
The town was adorable. The restaurant across the street from our hotel was wonderful. It was recommended by the hotel. We stopped at the bakery for breakfast and the baker was so sweet. His baked goods were excellent!
Excellent staff and amenities. Breakfast was outstanding. The bedroom and bathroom were comfortable and spacious. Highly recommend the location for touring the peninsula and taking the ferry to the Westfjords.

Adorable cabin outside of Stykkisholmur, just next to Helgafell mountain. Incredibly peaceful and quiet, with gorgeous scenery. A little small for a family of four (would be ideal for a couple), but still doable. Our hostess was very responsive and helpful. It would be the perfect place to look for the Northern Lights but alas, we had cloudy weather and weren't able to see them. We walked up to the top of Helgafell and were accompanied by two resident dogs who led us up the trail (which was the cutest thing!).
The concierge was immensely helpful answering questions and providing items we needed. the rooms are on the small side but they have two seats with a table between, something you don’t often get in a hotel room for 2. Bathroom was really tiny but had everything you need … There was also a large lounge on the main floor and a smaller lounge on the 2nd floor where our rooms were. Tiny town so I doubt there can be an inconvenient location but the location was just minutes from the harbor and nearby restaurants.
The staff and common room of Hotel Egilsen were superb. I loved the library and the opportunity to talk to both staff and other guests. The breakfast was also excellent. The room was clean and comfortable, and, of course, as an American, I appreciate the en suite bathroom. The location was also perfect. It was an easy walk to the harbour and a little park, several good restaurants, and the Bonus grocery store. We found Stykkisholmur to be a good home base for exploring the Snaefellsnes peninsula.
Stykkishólmur
We had a slight booking issue and the hotel staff sorted it out before we arrived so we didn't experience any disruption to our trip. I think they really went above and beyond to make sure we had a great experience. The room was clean and comfortable - great bed, great shower. Breakfast was made to order and delicious. When we go back to Stykkishólmur we'll definitely stay here again.
Stykkishólmur
This was a good, inexpensive location for spending the night in Stykkishólmur before travelling by ferry boat to the western fjords. The cabins are on the southern edge of Stykkishólmur, but within easy walking distance of a bakery and grocery store. Our cottage was clean, and being on the edge of Stykkishólmur we only heard birds calling at night (and a little wind).
Amazing place to stay, the location is really awesome. If you have seen the move the Secret life of walter mitty then this is in that same town and you can look over the entire town from the hotel room. The room was comfy and good value for money.
Stykkishólmur
