I'm not a routine guy, specially about my holidays. I try to visit always new places. But this last was my fifth time in Meran, and I find always things for the to do list of my next time there. This city has a unique charm. It's a combination about people, food, history, nature, walks, air... I'll be back, for sure.
Merano is an exceptional town in the mountains, not too far from the Austrian border. It is in a unique part of Italy that feels much more European than solely Italian. The crowds were a nice mix of Austrians, Italians, Germans, Swiss, and French. As it turns out, this area is not only one of the wealthiest in Italy, but also in Europe and it shows. In terms of Merano itself, a few days is enough. The thermal baths are wonderful, and there are a number of fantastic restaurants like Gigis, the Forst brewpub, La Bruschetta. The old town is lovely, as are the newer areas of the city. The walking paths and riverwalks are truly exceptional. I could – however – have spent a week or two in the area. It's endless. Hop on the cable car and buzz up some 2000 metres on the Merano 2000 to a beautiful high plateau with amazing hiking and huts. And that's just one mountain out of a number. I identified at least a week of day and overnight hikes around Merano alone. Not to mention cycle rides. The electric mountain bikes at Papin (at the train station) are worth every Euro. So much fun hitting the alpine trails for a day out and riding hut to hut. And that's before talking about wine tasting. An exceptional afternoon at Plonerhof across the valley from Villa Tovoli. Ploner's reserve wines are lavish and luxurious. The winemaker himself is an exceptional character. Week number two could simply be visiting the area's wineries and restaurants. Most of these are not in Merano, but rather five to twenty minute drives. Then there's the day (and night) trips. The area is dotted with outdoor adventures and scenery, from hikes to lakes. It also happens to be one of the areas where the skies are darkest in Europe. A quick 45 minute drive from Merano to Maso Corto on the evening of a new moon revealed an endless night sky and the Milky Way itself.
Merano must be what inspired Disney to create the quaint backdrop for most of Walt Disney World. The scenery is gorgeous, people super nice and everything is so accessible. I wish we had more than 2 days here. I've visited in winter and now in summer and it is a travelers gem.
You really have to want to go as its so difficult to get to (Verona 4 hours, Innsbruck 2.5 hours via Brenner pass!) but those who do make the effort are thoroughly rewarded with the experience of soaking up the multi cultural atmosphere of this very special place. For Alpine Tyrolean fans this is as good as it gets - a magical City at the foot of the main alpine ridge. An all seasons resort that rewards those who do their research and plan an adventure.
Merano was an unexpected delight. My biggest surprise was why didn't I know about Merano. An unexpected bike accident brought us to Merano for excellent medical care that required several days to successfully resolve so we could continue our vacation. We discovered many of the city's appealing features; the river walk, the Therme facility, hiking the miles of pathways in the hills surrounding Merano, and the varied cuisine of the region during our unplanned stay. I would definitely return and recommend you visit when you can.
Merano is definitifly a walking city. We loved the quaint streets, the museums, Sissi's walk , we went up with the Gondola and on the way home we stopped at Schloss Trauttmannsdorf, which was also very interesting. Unfortunately we had no time for the Therme I loved this city
Merano
I loved the location. It was super convenient walking distance in downtown Merano, to the Christmas Markets, and more. We loved how impeccably clean everything was. And the best part of the entire place was the walk in shower! It was heavenly. My absolutely favorite part of the entire apartment. We had 4 people and a dog with us and it was plenty of space. We’d recommend this to anyone and would stay here again!
the staff: extremely devoted, friendly and helpful, really exclusive the service: very personalized the room: very cosy the dining experience: delicious food the garden: beautiful This hotel is simply extraordinary in every aspect, I do recommend this place 100% satisfaction
