Historic Friulian Capital
Quaint and provincial Udine is one of those typical Italian towns grown for centuries under the influences of different cultures. It is also the centre of the Friuli area, long celebrated for the quality of its produce, including the ‘San Daniele’ ham, ‘Friuli DOC’ wine, and ‘Montasio’ cheese. Nonetheless, it also represents a gateway to the eastern Alps.
The area has been inhabited since the Neolithic age, and its foundation and name origin is not clear to historians. First mentioned in Latin records as Udene in 983, it was long under Venetian rule.
