Nice area to visit & explore, must be beautiful in cherry blossom season ! Very little English language in this part of Japan but managable for people with very little Japanese language understanding Don't miss Lake Senba or Aqua World near Oarai !
Comfortable city to be in, almost everywhere is clean, the transportation is efficient, breathtaking view, most of the maps has English translation. I enjoyed walking around watching the locals doing their routines like walking/cycling to school/work..
The skateboarders at the train station were entertaining. Mito is the sticks. I wouldn't choose it as a tourist destination though I'm sure there are a few things to see while you are there. I went for business.
Mito has a quiet, small town feel to it, so one is not overwhelmed by the crowds of Tokyo. It is a great spot to transition between Tokyo and Nikko - though it requires returning to Tokyo for onward travel to Nikko..

My first experience at a traditional style Japanese accomodation, very comfortable pleasant surroundings, very helpful staff despite my little Japanese & their little English, beautiful garden, delicious breakfasts & dinners. Around 15 minute pleasant walk from Ushihara train station, a 10 minute train ride from there to central Mito.

The hotel was great but it's hard for me to judge properly since I had a ridiculous discount. For the prince I paid (~AUD32) it was certainly excellent.

A decent hotel, clean and tidy, overall good value for money. The 24 hour family restaurant on the ground floor was a nice bonus.
