Guesthouse is just that: an old Japanese home (seems like it was built about 50 years ago or so, in the 1970s) that is now in use for guest stays. The house’s two original bedrooms are still just that, and the living room is now used to sleep groups of up to four people. House still has kitchen and original shower room. The concept is a cross between hostel (shared common areas) and hotel (separate rooms). Very cool. Looking for an authentic experience in Japan? This is it, right down to sleeping on tatami on futon beds and those sobakawa buckwheat pillows. Shiori-san, the owner/proprietor, was friendly, hospitable, and warmly welcoming. The hand-written name cards on each room door were a nice personal touch, too. Excellent value for money. Washing machine on site for use. Refrigerator for common use is full-sized if you’re eating on a budget or just want to store a bottle of saké for consumption and sharing. Just a wonderful experience and stay. If the need arises, I will stay there again! Another part of the charm is that this guesthouse is not really near anything, being as it’s in a standard Japanese neighborhood in a quiet part of the city. Not far to walk to the beach, and Fukutsu is a nice city just to walk around in. Public transit by bus will take you where you want to go. Summed up: if you want to experience what I would describe as fairly typical Japanese living that isn’t tailored to tourists, this is it. I hope I will have a reason to stay at Guesthouse Matsuo again! Hopefully my travels take me back there. Loved it!

What a cool spot. The host Shiori is the sweetest person ever. She taught my partner how to play the cello then we played together in the sunset at the beach. Fukutsu is a wonderful, charming town. The house is clean and tidy, with great facilities, its always nice having access to a washing machine.
