We enjoyed our stay. Everyone was so helpful and they made up our room each day which was great to come back to. My family got stuck at Kanko ski resort after the last buses left for a ride home and the owner kindly picked them up! Nothing was too much trouble. The hotel was a short few minute walk into the Main Street of town. The Onsen was lovely after a day on the slopes- it would be amazing if they did this area up just a little :)

We were in Akakura to ski for 6 nights and thoroughly enjoyed it. The town is quite small but there are plenty of eateries although depending on how long you are there you may double up on some (which is not necessarily a problem as I don't think we have ever had a bad meal in Japan). Skiing is pretty good although a bit light-on on the harder stuff. Be prepared to venture out of bounds through the trees to keep you interested. It is also easy to get the shuttle to nearby resorts for some variation, and I would suggest you do this. I like Akakura - it has a small town feel and suited our family (2 older children) just fine.
The snow has been a bit light on this year but there was still plenty in Myoko - Akakura Onsen. We didn't get the powder that is usually the norm but were very happy skiing on the wide (mostly empty slopes). For a more intermediate advanced experience Kanko was good too and the resorts are close to each other.
Suginohara is an excellent ski field although the food in the restaurants is a bit pricier than in places like Nozawa. Ikenotaira also has some good slopes, although not as much variety or length as Suginohara.
We loved the comfy beds and shared lounge, bar & dining area, the hot tub after being out in the snow all day and the freshly prepared breakfast and dinner. Fabulous vegan and vegetarian options and western friendly. Wonderful owners who made us feel so welcome from the start. Felt like a home stay and we could’ve stayed for longer! Great local recommendations and activities close by. Thank you Chereyne & Brett - the super hosts! :)
On a scale out of 10 would rate Myoko about a 6. The mountain infrastructure is very old and tired which accounts for the low cost of lift tickets. The mountain lacks steepness. Besides the many small restaurants it lacks a village atmosphere. The mountain geography doesn't support advanced skiers. It is not clearly sign posted for runs which also makes it difficult. We found Japan much more expensive than what it was 5-6 years ago and would probably go back to Canada for more value.
Gorgeous quaint Japanese village with authentic restaurants, amazing snow and ski resorts very close by. Very friendly locals, who go out of their way to help you, even with language barriers. Fantastic place to visit for snow sports, lift tickets are incredibly cheap compared to Australia - around $40-50 per day depending on discounts through accommodation, etc. Great place to visit!
Myoko
The location of the hotel was great, with a short walk to all local attractions and the Akakura Onsen slopes. The onsen was great, having both indoor and outdoor baths, and providing good bathroom products for use. The breakfast was good with a large variety of food in the buffet, as well as a range of drinks in a large dining hall. The service was good, and they were happy to provide transfers to the Myoko Kogen station at our requested time.
