Myoko Kogen is a great destination for a ski holiday, it is close to the train line, it offers a range of different ski locations within half an hour of the resort all accessible by bus or taxi. The ski lift tickets are very affordable. Myoko Kogen is a traditional Japanese Resort offering Onsens, traditional Japanese food, Ryokan accommodation as well as Western food and accommodation. The town is only 32 km from Nagano, where the Winter Olympics were held and it takes approx. 2 1/2 hours by train from Tokyo.
Akakura Onsen is a nice small village with plenty of restaurants and hotels. Some were closed due to the small amount of visitors, but as there was so much snow it was nice to have space everywhere. Good variety of foods, and a few bars. Make sure your lodge has transportation when the shuttle buses don't drive around the resorts (like this month, which made traveling around harder unless you have 4-wheel drive AND snow tires).
We loved the comfy beds and shared lounge, bar & dining area, the hot tub after being out in the snow all day and the freshly prepared breakfast and dinner. Fabulous vegan and vegetarian options and western friendly. Wonderful owners who made us feel so welcome from the start. Felt like a home stay and we could’ve stayed for longer! Great local recommendations and activities close by. Thank you Chereyne & Brett - the super hosts! :)
On a scale out of 10 would rate Myoko about a 6. The mountain infrastructure is very old and tired which accounts for the low cost of lift tickets. The mountain lacks steepness. Besides the many small restaurants it lacks a village atmosphere. The mountain geography doesn't support advanced skiers. It is not clearly sign posted for runs which also makes it difficult. We found Japan much more expensive than what it was 5-6 years ago and would probably go back to Canada for more value.
Gorgeous quaint Japanese village with authentic restaurants, amazing snow and ski resorts very close by. Very friendly locals, who go out of their way to help you, even with language barriers. Fantastic place to visit for snow sports, lift tickets are incredibly cheap compared to Australia - around $40-50 per day depending on discounts through accommodation, etc. Great place to visit!
A lovely ski area. A good variety of ski areas to choose from and also very quiet even on weekends. There is an adequate amount of restaurants in the town but it gets very busy during peak dinner times.

The owners are very kind and surprisingly accommodating for Japanese standards. We were traveling with a dog so their flexibility was a huge plus. The host is also the director of the Myoko Kogen Visitor Center and a certified mountain and trekking guide! The couple speaks very good English and is knowledgeable about the area in all seasons. We'll be back for some hiking in the summer for sure. Breakfast was lovely too, from the food presentation and their attentive service to the food variety.

Everything was great! Beautiful view on the mountains, bright illumination and very good tracks for snowboarding. We also liked the personal of the hotel: many of them knew English well, it was easy to communicate and also they were really glad to help. Moreover, there is a very different and tasty kinds of food and drinks. There is also a very good onsen and bath in the open air. We really liked everything! Thank you very much!

The lodge is in a beautiful location in the mountains. The view is breathtaking. If you like to have a traditional Japanese experience this is the right place. We booked half board and our breakfast and dinner was exceptional.. The owner and staff is very friendly. The lodge is rustic and feels like home. We had a wonderful time and will stay again.

We lived 5 days, everyday breakfast is different and so delicious. Owner couple is really nice and kind; whole hotel is clean and feel warm just like home; bed is comfortable; and in room also provided extension cord and more than usual hanger, which is really thoughtful. I am looking forward to visit again soon.
Once you entered the Lodge you can quickly tell it wont be the usual Hotel. The owner and a big part of the staff are Australians and same for the restaurant in the hotel that was offering different Aussies recipes. The owner and the staff were always willing to help us and advice us.

Stayed 2 nights for the Gran Fondo Myoko cycle event. Perfect location, wonderful hosts who pampered us with coffee and home baked cake upon arrival. On the race day they served special early breakfast for me at 5am, so grateful for that energy! Onsen was superb.
Room was very spacious and well laid out. Onsen facilities were nice and everything was clean. The Hotel was in a great location, near the main street and an easy walk to both lifts to access the mountain.
Great location. Close to everything in Myoko. Miwa the owner is very nice and helped us a lot with local tips. Everything is clean in the hotel. Good drying room for winter gear.
The staff was INCREDIBLY nice. They also offered to pick us up and drop us off at the train station, Myokokogen. Breakfast was also a really good deal.
