Hotel in Onomichi
Just 1312 feet from JR Onomichi Train Station, Daiichi Hotel offers rooms with an attached bathroom, free internet and sea or city views. The hotel has a Japanese restaurant. The location--not far from the train station and immediately across from the bike rentals and ferry terminal--was very convenient. This seems a primary reason for the "higher than otherwise expected" price mentioned by several others (which was still a comparatively reasonable value for a single en suite room). The room was fine for a quick overnight sleep -- clean if also a bit tired. The clerk was efficient and pleasant. Under similar circumstances, I'd likely stay again.

If you want to cycle the Shimanami Kaidou, be s7re to arrive early in Onomichi, since you are able to visit the main attractions, being Senkou-ji and the old temple course, in a few hours. After this you should be able to start cycling the Shimanami Kaidou.
I love this quiet little town, where there are always interesting little things happening just around the corner. At the same time, I love its size, and I don't know if I would want it any busier than it already is! Hint: Speak to everyone, be open and welcome, and they will happily provide amazing recommendations to the various secrets in the town.
I came here to mostly go cycling on the Shimanami Kaido. The town itself has many food options and temples for you to visit. The area has a wonderful view the higher up you go and even if you didn't the bay still provides a wonderful sight. With regards to cycling. The roads are well maintained, there are clear markings on the path if you decide to stick to it (don't though, there's so much more to see if you are willing to go up a mountain or take a side road). There are plenty of rental options as well although I think only the public rental bike station allowed you to go from Onomichi to Imabari and drop your bike off there. The cuisine definitely looks worth your while if you ever decide to come down. Unfortunately I don't eat pork but there are plenty of other seafood options that you can try here.
I visited for cycling the Shiminami Kaido. So I needed a base at the end of the ride. Onomichi is interesting but not sufficient to visit on the basis of the old town or the views from the observatory. I recommend to any cyclist to base their sightseeing from Imabari. Hotels are much better value. A 3 star hotel cost for a 1 star in Onomichi. Spend several days exploring all of the islands and return each night to Imabari. Also if you enjoy photography as well as cycling it is better to have the sun over your shoulder to enjoy the sights. Coming back to Imabari the sun is in front of you.
Onomichi is not on most people's radar, but it is such a cool place! A local cafe owner told us that the town was really dying, heaps of young people were moving away and that there was really nothing going on. He made a huge effort to encourage young people back, and the town really shows it! Heaps of cool cafes, art spaces, bars and sights including the fantastic cat alley. Really recommend spending a night or two.
A very nice quiet town, beautiful views and on the water. We unfortunately didn’t do enough research for eating out but there was lots around! Definitely would recommend the Onomichi to imabari bike ride!!! Spectacular!
This is a brand new hotel, just a short walk from Onomichi JR station and really close to the ferries to Setoda and Mukaishima. The rooms are sparkling clean and comfy, the staff is super friendly and helpful. The owner made sure I knew to check in on time and even came to meet me halfway to the hotel. There is a great view of the seaside from the rooms and the rooftop is great to chill in the evening. Will definitely return.
Onomichi
The staff here was very accommodating and their service style was warm and welcoming. I ordered the breakfast and it was a delicious traditional Japanese breakfast. The onsen was also very nice and you get to walk through the beautiful courtyard garden to get to it. Finally, our room had a beautiful view of the water and you can watch the sun set from it.
Onomichi
Fantastic location - this is the most beautiful view from a hotel room I've had :)! Wake up early to see the sunrise from the rooftop terrace! The location is so quiet, you can hear the crickets outside at night. The beach is a couple of minutes' walk - clean and warm water in August. I wholeheartedly recommend this bed and breakfast :).
Onomichi

Onomichi
The best view in Onomichi hands down. If you are looking to experience what staying in a traditional Japanese house is like this is the place.
Nice sized room with a good view of the waterfront. The breakfast was good, but the small dishes were limited compared to bigger hotels.
Onomichi
The Japanese-style room was big and comfortable. We had everything we needed, even bread and eggs to make breakfast the next morning!
