Karagandy is an important city to visit.
Karagandy is an important city to visit. The city is full of beautiful parks, museums, and monuments and is close to Dolinka, the site of the former Karlag GULAG headquarters. As a female solo traveler, I felt very safe in Karaganda and Dolinka, and people were kind and friendly. Karagandy has plenty of interesting sites, especially for those interested in history. On this trip, I rented a car and drove to Karkaraly National Park, which is very beautiful; I hope to go back, but I will find a guide, as there are no trail markings anywhere!Guest review byAnneKazakhstan - 8.0
Best to go when there is no snow.
Best to go when there is no snow. Get a taxi to the Karlag/gulag museum that is just outside of town. You can also book an English tour guide for that museum to learn more. Rimir and his wife were so helpful when I got lost in the city. As a tourist from the West fascinated with the former USSR staying in a Krushchevka in a city with a strong Soviet Heritage was a real novelty and it has been fun telling my friends about that. Rimir helped me get to Karlag which is a very sobering and educational experience.
