The best stay we had in whole Sri Lanka. The location is superb. You are 10 meters from the beach. Great for surfers. Room is clean, quiet and with amazing sea view. The main part of the experience is the stuff. These guys were absolutely amazing. Honestly I don’t get such service even from my grandma. We felt really welcomed. Tashan and Chamil were the best stuff I have ever experienced in any place I have been yet, always smiling, always helpful. In the kitchen mister Sujee will take care of you and believe me - you have never had better sea food. Absolutely recommending this place. I don’t event want to leave.

One of my favourite stays. The room was bright, beautifully designed and very comfortable. The staff were incredibly friendly, and the manager was fantastic – attentive, warm and easy to talk to. I loved the relaxed vibe of the place, especially with the dogs and cats wandering around, which made it feel like home. A really wonderful experience. I’d absolutely recommend it.

Matara isn't a big town so it is relatively quick to get from A to B. The beach is beautiful. But there aren't that many restaurants in in the town. The Matara Rest House near the fort had good food and drinks and is one of the most worth it dining options nearby. Lemon is also a good option. There are restaurants closer to the touristy spots but those are on the pricier side. snorkeling with turtles is popular in Matara.

Matara, was a good place for me.I stayed at La Polena,for 12 nights.The breakfast was excellent and the lady that made it changed the sheets and cleaned my room twice.I do think that they could give visitors a bottle of water daily.Also a jug to make a cup of tea in each room.Very little money is spend on maintaining the place.Also a sign with numbers for hiring Tuk-Tuk drivers would help.The manager is nice ,but a little slow in offering advice. Island rsetuarant past the Doctors had teh best food.I also needed more veg.So bought carrots,tomatoes and cucumber for myself.Also egg,roll in town. Restaurants at the beach are a rip off.10% added for tax.This is nonsense.Tuk driver from the Railway station to hotel.600 rup The one Hotel to Trainstation 800 the train from Matara.4 -5 hours 600rph.?

Matara is a beautiful coastal town in southern Sri Lanka, full of charm and local culture. The beaches are clean and peaceful—perfect for swimming, surfing, or just relaxing. I enjoyed exploring the historic Matara Fort and visiting nearby places like Polhena Beach and Parey Dewa Temple. The local food is delicious, and the people are warm and welcoming. It's a great place to experience authentic southern Sri Lankan life with a mix of nature, history, and the sea.

Polhena

Polhena If you are looking for a tourist only beach, this isn't it. Mostly locals and that's why it was so lovely. Very small beach with no waves. A dead reef but some fish and turtles. Local people there were really kind. Which is what made this place special. The area itself was a bit of a tourist trap but the beach was actually was a small and cute meeting point.

Matare is part of a chain of cities along the southernmost coast of Sri Lanka. It has beaches for expert surfers as well as beginners and those who just want to be by the beach. The beaches along the coast are all sparkling translucent and enticing. Find hotels along the shore because the traffic on the roads is dense and sometimes unpleasant to westerners the beaches and the kindness of the population more than make up for it.

Nice place, but you have to make an effort to explore, which is nice. Not the commercial fully packaged commercial tourist deal. Good quirky options. Has quite a lot of Sri Lanka's history, forts, but courts, and old paved streets, as I said, a great if you make a little effort to explore. The Duchman's Street is a great beachside restaurant!

Hidden gem. Old school Sri Lankan hotel on great surfing beach. Quiet but beautiful. Have been coming here for years. It’s simple but that’s the beauty of the place. You are looked after well. The food is so good. In fact it’s some of the best I ve had on the island. If you want to get away from the hipster surfing crowds this is your place. Empty beach break, under your balcony. No trills. But peaceful. No wonder it’s called top secret

This is such a relaxing and peaceful place we absolutely loved our stay. Polhena Beach and madiha Beach are both incredibly beautiful, and the best part is that they’re just a short walking distance from the villa. If the villa adds a pool, it would be truly perfect. But even now, I can honestly recommend this place to anyone looking for comfort, friendly hosts, and a beach lifestyle you’ll never forget. 🙌🙌

Sam the host is incredibly nice and helpful. The rooms are simple but comfortable and we're very clean. Lovely balcony on the top floor where we enjoyed sitting in the evening. The shared kitchen offers free coffee and tea and the hotel is just across the Polhena beach
