The outdoor setting on the beach was amazing. There were plenty of hammocks in the shade and chairs for sunbathing. It was value priced. The staff was very friendly.

I think almost the best place to stay in Matara(Madiha). The hotel was very clean and the staff was super friendly. THe breakfasts were really good and big. The hotel having a roof top, where you can see the ocean and the sunset, which were super beautiful. They having a natural pool with ocean water and some sunbeds, which were really great too. The rooms were really okay, and the bed was quite big. They having a generator so the power cuts where not anoying since the electricity came back soon after a cut. AC where in the room, which is a big advantage in hot weather. The bathroom was okay too and clean. (Dont forget to close the room windows around night time, since gekkos coming in :D)

My daughter and I truly enjoyed our stay here Terrific beach front location (with turtle eggs safe point right in front!) and many restaurants nearby Large rooms with spacious balcony (we had a sea view) and super clean with AC, fan, and mosquito netting. Very comfy and really good value Gopi, the proprietor and staff are so very pleasant and enormously helpful with everything. We especially enjoyed outstanding transportation services to the various surfpoints we wanted to try. Super! It was a really good experience and will definitely come back

Polhena beach is an excellent place to have a safe swim for a traveller and can see turtles in the sea if you are lucky enough. And can visit Matara light house and Kudawalla water air hole by travelling a bit from Matara which has another nice beach.

Polhena is a nice village, Matara is a nice city with friendly people. There is lots to do in this area. For example guided snorkling at Polhena Beach where you can really swim with the turtles, a boattrip on the Nilwala Ganga where you can see crocodiles. Or visit the Starfort. A great restaurant in Matara city is Dutchmanstreet restaurant. In Polhena i recommend eating at Sunil Rest, Blue Corals or Reef Edge restaurant. Walking around at night in Polhena... take a stick and flash light with you, the street dogs just had puppys (cute) but their mother instinct gave me the creeps.

Matara is great transport hub, has fast bus connection with Colombo (via expressway). Also most buses on south pass through Matara. Though it's not a good place to stay longer - crowds, no good beaches, high prices.

People are so peaceful and feeling safer. Wow!!! I wish they had more pick me like taxi services but all fare and good. Beach need a little extra love from environmental authorities. But it was nice still. Thank you Matara. I love to live in Matara for real. Its so chill out places out there in all of the island . ❤🧡😊

We stayed at Turtle Eco Beach Hotel.
We stayed at Turtle Eco Beach Hotel. Olympic or near Olympic length pool, but only two lanes wide. Quite unique. The owners are French as are many of the guests. But so many languages can be heard there. Very family friendly! We traveled back and forth to Polhena Beach (about 1.5 km to the south) for snorkeling daily. (Between 08:00 AM and noon, the water is the clearest.) Sadly, during our stay, the daily low tides coincided with - roughly - that same span of time, so we had to be extra careful to avoid getting scratched up by the coral reef. Our stay was for three days from 15-18 January. We saw sea turtles every day and could even feed them "sea grass" by hand. We ate near the hotel or near Polhena Beach and avoided going into town...

Matara is a maritime city that has fast developed over recent years while maintaining its southern charm and hospitality. The highlights are the Matara Beach and promenade where you can enjoy the ocean and warm waves. My restaurant there is the Dutchman's Street where you can experience the outdoors concept style of dining with a cosy ambience and a great choice of dishes on the menu. The Star Fort is worth a visit which has a small museum inhouse as well, you can learn about the colonial history here. Easy to get around by tuk or walk , especially love the MATARA PROMENADE AND BEACH !!

Very peaceful, quiet location with ocean and nature sounds, not road noise. For some reason it’s called Ocean Villa at Surf Spot on booking but Ocean Villa at Beach on google. The staff is pleasant but don’t go overboard.
