Hotel in Chicanna
Offering an outdoor pool, Chicanná Ecovillage Resort is located in Calakmul´s biosphere reserve. Free WiFi access is available in front desk area of this ecologic, self-sustaining resort. The rooms were clean and spacious, perfect for a short stay on the way to the Calakmul ruins. Staff friendly and welcoming, eager to share tips about the surroundings. Since it was winter season the temperature was pleasantly naturally airconditioned at night, slightly cold even! For dinner we had a tortilla soup and chicken breast with veggies, simple but very tasty. Would revisit if I return to the region!

Calakmul is a real adventure! The road in is to be repaired this year, it is a bit tricky but no need for 4x4, just plan for 45-60 min from entrance to site. The actual site is a real Indiana Jones experience, with toucans, beautifully multicoloured wild turkeys, gorgeous little birds, tiny foxes, monkeys, etc., etc., easily seen - get up early to spot larger animals. A guide is a good idea (available at the entrance and will come in your car) as they have really good historical, local, flora and fauna information and know what to look for when spotting things. We didn't get round to seeing any other site as Calakmul took up all our available time!
We had traveled there to tour the ruins at Calakmul, but, on the advice of our hosts, made a stop at the ruins of Becan. Amazing place with great history. Do yourself a favor and hire one of the kids that are guides. They are well versed and give great insight to the area. This is a hidden gem that is almost as big as Calakmul
We visited the Maya ruins of Dzibanché (inc. Kinich-Ná), Kohunlich, Xpuhil, Becán and Chicanná en route from Bacalar to Rio Bec Dreams in one long, hot, dusty day and it was thoroughly enjoyable - they are all different and have something to offer.
Our stay was perfect, Luis and his staff made sure we didn´t miss anything at all. Delicious home cooked dinner and breakfast, beautiful room with very comfortable bed and warm water and fridge, rides to Xpujil when needed, very kind and attentive staff, even a small presentation on maya´s in the garden in beautiful moonlight with complimentary cocoa drinks. Luis himself being unforgettable person taking care of our every need. Casa Maya is a good place to stay over night when visiting Calakmul and other local maya ruins. Becan is only few minutes walk from the hotel (!) and it was also very impressive site. The hotel has bikes that you can borrow for free. Warm recommendations!
Near Chicanna are three archeological sites that all offer something special. Xpuhil with its three tower temple, Becan with its large archeological site (check for Umberto to guide you :), and Chicanna for the serpents door. Quiet sites compared to Yxmal, Chitzen Itza and very recommendable for a visit.
