The old part of the town around the Fort and old mosque is worth a visit, as well as the old houses along the stony hill to the north of the centre. With some more time, a short climb to the top of that hill would probably provide a great panorama of the town. Otherwise, in the town and along the main roads one can find all the shops and amenities a traveler needs. Just north of the town, along Hwy. 9 is a large food-supermarket Lulu. Close to Ibri are the spectacular prehistoric tower tombs at Bat and Al Ayn. Even though a UNESCO heritage, there are no signs to them, but nevertheless relatively easy to reach from the main roads. Certainly worth the trouble to reach them.
The old souk area is quite autentic, and so is the neighborhood around the palace. Unfortunately the palace is open only from Sunday to Thursday from 8am to 12pm so no way to visit it on a weekend! Not to miss: wadi damm 30 minutes away, literally paradise!
