unbelievable charm in such a small accessible area ... the historical center is very clean and orderly, surrounded and infused with nature nature nature. Just follow the river paths into this green wonderland so safe , mellow, natural , yet elegant !
A beautiful city with a really interesting central area. There is a waterpark outside the town and plenty of shopping at reasonable prices in the town. You can take a pedal boat on the river and the local government appear to be investing in the river aspect. The cathedral is a must see and has recently been renovated. Nearby is the museum/art gallery. There are some really lovely cafés and restaurants with terraces looking out on the river serving traditional pasteries and food. I would definitely go back for a couple of nights again.
We chose this town for a one-night stay between a house rental in the Minho area and a flight out of Porto. It was a bit of a random choice based on my criteria of a cute and well-priced hotel under an hour from the airport, but the town also has some cool history so we gave it a go. Upon arrival, we discovered that it was the first night of the town fair! I have been to several fairs in Spain but this was my first in Portugal. It was the same basic vibe - families delighted to see one another, tasty treats from food stands, brightly like rides blaring pop music over the sound of teens screaming. We grabbed ourselves a couple of petite pours of Super Bock and tried Portuguese-style hot dogs, which are packaged in jars or cans and come with lettuce and crispy fried onions; my Chicago-born partner even approved of how good they were! Amarante puts on a good fair, and it takes place along the river so we were able to explore the main streets of town in conjunction with the party. The only bummer about the fair is that we couldn't get in to see inside of the church, which is of some importance having been built by a saint. I plan to spend more time in Portugal in the coming years, so maybe I will head back to Amarante for an afternoon to take in the monuments.
The staff were young, attentive, and at all times very engaging. Without doubt, they are a great credit to the reputation of the hostel. The interior design and layout of the hostel has been really well thought out and makes for a really relaxing stay. This hostel is absolutely first rate!
There always seems to be lots going on. The town tries to cater for a wide range of interests and the surrounding countryside offers good walks and bike rides. Restaurants are good and on the whole value for money. There is a Michelin star restaurant which we didn't try although it it was recommended.
Amarante is a lovely not so quaint 58k inhabitant it’s historical with at least 3 churches to visit and a monastery, an impressive collection at the art museum which is a beautiful cloistered building. One can peddle and kayak in the river, and sunbathe at the river beaches nearby; many hills dorms wonderful hiking trails. The town is peppered with tascas/ tabernas with excellent food and we’re the heart of vinho verde country. It has Roman and 16-17thc relics, a fantastic chateau yellow building which hosts a fancy hotel and a Michelin awarded restaurant; it’s has a couple of seasonal bar-restaurants on the rivers edge with great views and many tear raced restaurants and tea-coffee shops yea round, discos, bars that turn into discos at night, many mysterious streets and central neighborhoods to explore as well as a rich folklore, like the huge pastry called Ferramenta de São Gonzalo(“ (St. Gonzalo’s tool- referring to the virile properties of the saint who built a bridge all to himself whose habit’s rope could be pulled and end spinsterhood; the devil of Amarante, in crafts and celebrated in a sort of carnival in August and other rich crafts! Much is being renovated and restaures! A must see!
If you stay in the suites with the private pool, you will feel like you are alone in the hotel, a completely quiet and relaxing atmosphere. Different from other hotels, the tasting menus are FULL size plates, so prepare yourself to eat very well and be very full. 😉 The staff is really helpful and kind. Last but not least the wines are amazing, and you will find them everywhere, in your room, restaurant, even in the spa.
Amarante
Casa do Fontão deserves its highest rating, and can be a destination on its own. Thoughtfully decorated mansion in a quiet residential neighborhood only 6 min drive to the center of Amarante. We had a spacious bedroom with comfortable bed and huge wardrobe. From the moment we walked in to the minute we left we felt warmth and welcome of our hosts. Abundant breakfast with healthy options, welcome drink and more.
Amarante
Incredible service and a historic house. The host took the time to help us see the house and the history and allowed us a moment of seeing how she grew up. Her grandfather is an accomplished artist and the works displayed throughout the house pay homage to the history. This place is a little piece of magic in Portugal. Breakfast was simple and perfect and getting to walk the grounds at sunset inspired me.
Amarante
The space is well decorated, great use of space, everything felt very premium. The location was perfect and peaceful. You can walk to everything you need in Amarante. João was very nice and offered great recommendations for restaurants. WiFi was great as well. Also, super easy check-in with the most modern say of unlocking the apartment. You will ask yourself why everyone doesn't use it!
Amarante
We were met at the apartment to get the door entry codes. Accommodations were very tastefully decorated. It was furnished with a combination washer/dryer that was unfamiliar but much appreciated. The building was quiet, we could see the river from our apartment. The location was very close to the river and bridge. Highly recommend this accommodation for your stay in Amarante.
Amarante
I stayed in about 10 places during my three weeks of travel in Portugal. And, this one was my favorite of all of them! This is an impressive building that happens to be adjacent to a five-star hotel and is across the street from the river. It has several rooms with very nice living and dining areas. I love the décor and the breakfast was fantastic!
Amarante
super clean apartment, easy to find, comfortable bed. Very clear instructions on getting in and check-in. Very close to walking around the town of Amarante and short drive to waterpark. As additional bonus we had welcome gift of fresh juices, water and wine in the fridge. Will definitely come back when next time in the area Obrigada!!!!
Amarante
Clean new spaces with country charm setting, swimming pool and close to Amarante. The people were excellent for service, information and activities. We tried and enjoyed the craft beer, berries and the great breakfasts. It would make a good home base while visiting the Guimarães, Duoro etc. areas. Day trips to Porto are easy.
Great location in one of the most turistical streets of Amarante, just a few steps of nice restaurants and coffee shops. And luckily with parking near the hotel. Very helpfull staff. The room on the top floor had everything we needed with a very nice terrace and a city view. Simple but effective building renovation.
The hotel is easy to find and located centrally. The is a large free car park located nearby. The reception staff were friendly and efficient. The room was large, comfortable and well equipped. There are many good bars and restaurants nearby. The breakfast was buffet style and good.
Amarante
High ceiling room with bright doors all around. This was a very comfortable room. Nice breakfast, not too elaborate. Meals available later in the day on the pastry shop balcony. Consider Amarante as a pleasant location for exploring the Douro Valley.
