A bit of History:
Between 1850 and 1900, the city expanded: "A new Bordeaux ring road was created, along with long boulevards. Today, these are called Antoine Gautier, George V, Jean-Jacques Bosc, etc.", explains the guide.
At the time, the idea was to name these new entrances to the city in order to demarcate the border with the surrounding communes. But the word "porte" was already being used to designate the entrances... to the old town. These were the remains of the city wall, such as the Porte Cailhau. The gates corresponded to the city's first ring of courtyards. The term "barrier" was chosen for the new border posts.
And since new names had to be found, the gates borrowed those of the roads to which they provided access.
