Bachelors Lodge, Hundon sits in the grounds of Bachelors Hall which was a secret lair of the British Resistance, requisitioned by the army in the Second World War. The main house and coach house (where soldiers were billetted) was the nerve centre of what would have formed an underground network of resistance fighters ready to repel a German invasion. It was kept under wraps by the Official Secrets Act for 50 years. The house itself is set in tranquil gardens, surrounded by meadows, yet it’s close enough to a wealth of attractions and things to do, see and explore. Hundon is just two miles from Clare, Suffolk’s smallest town with over 2000 residents. Suffolk became extraordinarily wealthy from its production and trade of woollen cloth. This wealth was then used to build some of the finest timber framed houses in the country, including in Clare, Cavendish, Long Melford and Lavenham. Clare has over 130 listed buildings, a host of independent shops, cafes and pubs, a wonderful ‘Wool Church’ and Clare Ancient House Museum.
