Fifth generation at Crotlieve. I'm now retired, in my youth I travelled a lot as a climber to the worlds great landscapes all reinforcing a love of the outdoors and nature and I came to realize our own local landscape and remarkable history here in Rostrevor was second to none and the world might come to see. So in 2009 I headed on a new trail and converted my barn / workshop to a holiday let, incorporating lots of Eco developments and natural materials, our own ideas of comfort and homeliness and invited people to come stay. Active in recording and protecting the ancient and notable trees of Rostrevor with the Woodland Trust. Author of the Kilbroney park Tree Trail and now with local art and poetry added to the Tree Trail brochure it was published as a New Book, The Trees Of Kilbroney Park. And for guests staying at Crotlieve, if it suits, I'm delighted to take them on my Tree Trail in the great meadow Rostrevor, about 2.5 hours mostly on the level. The great local walking trails we forged years ago while training for the climbing I have wrote up as a new local walking leaflet to be available soon, my Fallows walking trail 11km has been upgraded by the Mourne Heritage Trust and council for tourism. I'm a Member of our local historic society, and in September on the anniversary of the death of Major General Robert Ross born in Rostrevor 1766, I present a talk for the council on his defeating the American army at Bladensburg and taking Washington in 1814. Historic Rostrevor. Charming architecture with 7 old pubs, 5 new restaurants and music 3 nights a week, all dwarfed by the backdrop of Slieve Martin, first Summit of the Mournes and with the ancient Oak woodland of Slievemeen sweeping down to the sea. Visit the 100ft high Monument for General Ross at sea point. Walk the beautiful Fairy Glen and see the ancient Oaks in the great meadow where Queen Elizabeth once stayed at the Lodge, Take the trail to Cloughmore, set down by a receding glazier 11000 yrs ago and see the wonderful panoramic views over Carlingford Lough and beyond, all inspiring CS Lewis to write The Chronicles of Narnia on his visits here. Ring the 1000 yr old St Bronaghs bell, and see the grave of Giant Murphy. Try the world class bike trails. The many great local Golf courses, fishing & sailing. The wonderful scenic drives in the great Mournes and the wealth of places of interest & historic attractions. Writing of Rostrevor, William Makepeace Thackeray wrote, Were such a bay lying upon English shores it would be a world wonder. Crotlieve on the east coast, half way between Belfast and Dublin. The perfect place to come fill your hearts with Ireland.
