Legendary City of Robin Hood
Famous for its association with Robin Hood, Nottingham is in the very heart of England. The outlaw’s legend lives on, with many city streets and buildings named after him and his Merry Men. A Robin Hood statue sits at the foot of Nottingham Castle, on a small hill with historic pubs built into it. Also cut into the rock are visitable caves extending under the city.
The Old Market Square is the largest in the UK and becomes a city beach in the summer, with rides and a small pool. Permanent fixtures are the impressive Council House with its Exchange Arcade shops, and the several Nottingham hotels with parking in the surrounding area.
During the 19th century, Nottingham was an important lace-making centre and many Victorian warehouses and buildings remain in the Lace Market area. Neighbouring Hockley is home to the National Ice Centre and independent shops, while the biggest shopping centres are Broadmarsh and the Victoria Centre.
In the western suburbs, by Nottingham University, Wollaton Park surrounds an Elizabethan stately home, while east of Trent Bridge cricket ground is the National Water Sports Centre in Holme Pierrepont. Lovely city and people (most of the time). Lovely low-rise development, and great river locations and parks. Plenty to see, lots of good pubs, restaurants and bars as well as shops. The city is hilly, so you need to be aware if you have difficulty with mobility. There are many buses, trams, and taxis to get around the city, although we didn't use them. So many bars, restaurants and art galleries to choose from. We ate at @PANDAMAMA, always a winner for us, and coffee at @COSYCLUB, which is beautiful and highly recommended. During the day, we booked a massage at @CITYBLISS NOTTINGHAM at the Hilton, great value for money. Claire is knowledgeable about a variety of illnesses and can offer tailored sessions. Went specifically for a concert. Only stayed one night. Wished we’d stayed longer…..there was a ‘good vibe in the city centre. The city centre is eroding it gets worse every time we attend an event. The streets are filthy and rubbish is everywhere. There are beggars in your face every 20 yards and evidence of rough sleeping on every corner. Homelessness is a terrible thing but the majority we saw are drug addicts and yes i can say that. You can say that all cities have issues but Nottingham is spiralling downwards. The area of eateries to th side of the theatres is discussing Drunks Druggies and loud youths. I really enjoyed my 6 day-holiday in Nottingham. I was on my own and honestly I've never felt in danger or uneasy during my staying, it's a safe and cosy little city. It's also very easy to go round by bus, I bought a 6 day- ticket at Travel City Centre in Old Market Square) I was lodging in Nottingham, but I took the chance to visit one town/city every day, it was so easy and comfortable travelling by train with EMR (Eastmidlands Railway): I visited Lincoln, Derby, Matlock ( Matlock Bath), Stamford. One day I went to Wollaton Hall & Park, just outside Nottingham (you take bus N° 30 in Upper Parliament Road, £ 5.50 for a day-ticket) and it was awesome!
