Potter Heigham is one of the major boating centre's on the Norfolk Broads, The famous medieval bridge gives access to the Upper Thurne, Hickling Broad and Horsey Mere. The banks of the River Thurne at Potter Heigham are lined with waterside bungalows, which can only be accessed by foot or boat. Children can enjoy feeding the ducks at the riverside. In winter large numbers of marsh harriers roost in the reed bed and merlin and hen harrier are also regular. Barn owl is almost guaranteed and you may see kingfisher if you are lucky. Interesting mammals include the introduced Chinese water deer, red deer and hard-to-see otters. Among the many insects are two iconic local specialities – the swallowtail butterfly and the Norfolk hawker dragonfly. Less than five miles away is the Broads’ market town of Stalham with its restaurants, pubs and shops and superstore.
