This hotel is amazing!! We don’t have one bad thing to say about it. From the food, to the location & staff, 5* all around. Everyone was super helpful and friendly - especially Rosena. The freshly prepared food of an evening is very tasty, just what you need after a long day out & the breakfast was also top notch. Hotel is situated in a little village and close to lots of country walks.
Set by a river, this Lakeland YHA in Borrowdale Valley has fine mountain views and an informal atmosphere. Enjoy family-friendly walks, laundry facilities and hot meals.

Great location, clean and comfortable room, excellent shower.
Set in 2 acres of tranquil wooded gardens. The charming rooms have TVs and tea and coffee facilities, and many have breathtaking views of the valley and fells.

The hotel was fantastic- cozy, inviting and delicious food. There was a fire in the fireplace on the chilly evenings. Breakfast was wonderful, and Debby, the associate, was helpful, gracious and kind. We would definitely return in the future.
Highfield features great lake and mountain views and its own private car park. The beautiful rooms have en suite bathrooms and tea/coffee making facilities.

Dale was a fantastic host and couldn’t have done enough for us. He kindly informed us we’d been upgraded to a nicer room which had an amazing view of Thirlmere with a patio and asked us for any dietary requirements for breakfast. We told him we’re both vegan but didn’t expect much, they actually took the time to nip out and get some vegan sausages and oat milk. We had an oat meal porridge with toast for breakfast which was really nice however there were other options available. Breakfast doesn’t usually start til 08:15 which would have meant we wouldn’t have had time to eat on our last day due to an activity we had booked early morning. I spoke to Dale the evening before and he was able to see to us at 8 so we could make it. Great experience, we will definitely come back
Absolutely stunning landscape. There are lots of beautiful walks from the hotel and a great tea room - the Flock Inn with wonderful views from the back seatin area. It is short walk to Stonethwaite which has a great pub and mining museum in the church. The best thing is the serenity and lack of other tourists.

very well located if you want to stay somewhere quiet but also be in short driving distance from lots of popular hikes and Keswick town.
Some of the best views around here.
I would say don't stay here if you don't have a car, stay in Keswick.
not sure how frequent busses are but would be a pain as the shops are 15mins away driving if you forgot the milk!
again if you like boozing then stay in Keswick itself as plenty pubs / bars etc.
Food is great in Keswick loads of options, good hotel restaurants etc from Rosthwaite to Keswick along main road too. also plenty of places to stop, park, hike, picnic etc as you drive straight by the lake.
Very dog friendly everywhere we went. Cat Bells and High Spy are some of the friendlier climbs / hikes with amazing views and also good for your pooch!

Beautiful walks and stunning views of the fells.
Beautiful walks and stunning views of the fells. There is no need to use the car as there are many walks around, two pubs nearby, and a cafe. There is a regular bus from Keswick that comes through Rosthwaite to Buttermere and back.
The location is excellent for walkers, but it is quite remote, so maybe not ideal for families with small children looking for kid-friendly activities.

I love this part of the world, I never get tired of driving or hiking the valley and the surrounds no matter what the weather. It is a staggeringly beautiful place and it is sometimes hard to believe this is in England.

The location is incredible, perfect for heading out into the surrounding hills and valleys etc. The Derwent water circular walk is a must. The walks are challenging ! (not all) and walking boots etc are a must! There are no shops in the village just one small tearoom and two pubs/hotels, Keswick is a six mile scenic drive.

Lovely location with nice walks nearby.
Lovely location with nice walks nearby. Just don't expect great tv reception or wi-fi signal at the hotel, but the views, scenery, location, welcome from the staff at the hotel all combined more than made up for this. We loved our stay and would love to return again at some time for another visit.
The Royal Oak is very clean and comfortable. The staff are welcoming and attentive. A bonus is that dogs are welcomed. The food is very good restaurant quality and prepared by the resident chef.
You can walk into the beautifully rugged hills from the hotel via the soft green, peaceful farmland.
There appears to be a regular bus service from the village as I saw many walkers waiting for it in the morning as they set off and early evening when they came off the hills.
What a beautiful hotel, loved everything about this place. Staff were all so friendly and welcoming, especially Serena the Greek lady. Food was amazing, some of the best meals I've had and reasonably priced. The bed was the comfiest I've ever slept in. The other guests all so made our stay a very good one, as they were also very friendly and welcoming. Owner was a lovely lady too, would definitely stay here again and will recommend it to our family and friends.
We booked a bunk room with four beds. It was perfectly OK for a party of blokes climbing some hills. The hotel has had a lot of money spent on it and it was elegantly decorated (even the bunk room) and spotlessly clean. The food was better than standard pub grub, and good value for money. It is of course in a beautiful area. The staff were charming and friendly. Altogether a very well run establishment.
The staff Iona was so friendly and welcoming
The breakfast menu was extensive and good quality products
The evening meal in the restaurant was beautifully prepared and a fantastic choice
The Riverside bar friendly some nice whiskey
The ambiance was typical traditional Lakeland luxury at an affordable price
Location perfect for Borrowdale walking
Lovely, friendly staff. It seemed like they were all family and made us feel part of their family for the two nights we were there. We were also overjoyed that we could bring our trainee guide dog puppy to stay with us inside the hotel. Furniture in the room was a little dated, but all very clean and beds were clean and comfortable.
Cracking cosy countryside hotel, perfect for walks or a good book and a pint. Recently renovated the room was lovely as were the public rooms. The breakfast was excellent, wonderfully dog friendly and a decent drying room. Coffee machine available throughout the day and an excellent set menu supper option.
Stayed here before and again fantastic staff and superb food and drink.
If you want a place in this area for accommodation, we wouldn't book any other hotel, without first checking availability here 1st.
Definitely recommend to anyone and we'll be back soon.
100 out of a 100.... 👍👍
Fabulous stay, food and staff very friendly. We loved the heated boot room so our boots and coats were dry for the day after. Perfect starting point for a hike, we did Eagle Crag, Sergeants Crag and Ullscarf one day and Grange Fell and Castle Crag the day after from the hotel.
Hotel has had a recent refurbishment and is stunning throughout. Food was excellent for both evening meals and breakfast. Super friendly staff and posh boot room with individual air dryers for your walking boots. A walkers paradise!
we took out two dogs and throughout the stay they were so accommodating. lovely staff and a beautiful hotel will definitely will be back. perfect spot. lovely breakfast. the rooms were perfect.
