The whole place to ourselves. Very nice interior. Very well equipped for cooking, nice kitchen space. Lovely touch and much appreciated was the muffins, champagne, and milk in the fridge.

Matfen is a Northumberland village 20 miles from Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Matfen Village Store and Café, a welcoming spot to pick up self-catering essentials, and Matfen Black Bull, a delightful country local pub, are centred around the Matfen Burn. Just a few miles north is Hadrian's Wall, with a prehistoric standing stone, Stob Stone, nearby. The Roman road, The Devil's Causeway, passes the village to the west, leading north to Berwick-upon-Tweed. Matfen Hall is now a country club and hotel with a golf club set in lovely grounds.
