Colchester is a brilliant town to visit, you have the old and new part to walk round ranging from a good collection of shops and food outlets to browse and walking round the various churches, castle, monastery ruins and lovely parks.
The town is within walking distance of both train stations, taxis are plenty also. Take a good pair of comfy walking attire for feet as you will be walking up and down gradients!! A great place to visit on the local bus is Manningtree where there is a antiques emporium to walk round with a great cafe in the high street for food.
If visiting Colchester for the first time I recommend staying at least a minimum of 4 days as their is a lot to see of interest. Lots of charity shops too!!
For families do visit Colchester Zoo which is a great day out, this can be reached by bus also if you do not drive.

Colchester is a gem.
Colchester is a gem. Lovely architecture and sights, good cafes and pubs, shopping and eateries. It's not at all dog friendly, though, which is a big drawback if you ask me. Come on, Colchester, Britain loves its pets!
Old hotel in the Centre of Colchester, great location, however our first room was next to a bar with (live?) music which was so loud it was like they played in our bedroom. We were offered a new room located on the main street which meant that we were woken throughout the night by screaming drunken people in need of a taxi. We were visiting my son but wont be staying there again next time. Also the hairdryer cd not be plugged in in the bathroom in front of a mirror which was rather odd and inconvenient to say the least.
Nicely located on Colchester High Street within walking distance of most nearby amenities. Bed decently comfortable, plug sockets by the bed, and of course free Wi-Fi. Staff were very polite and friendly, and the service was very efficient. I slept very well and was easily able to walk to Castle Park, local restaurants and shops, and Colchester Town train station from the hotel. I wouldn't bother with the breakfast, as you have many options on the High Street and nearby, within spitting distance, for much cheaper.
Due to the train strike by Greater Anglier (30 Sep 2023 to 04 Oct 2023), I had to stay in Colchester for a few nights for work purpose. When I checked in, I was greeted by Roland (the hotel manager). He helped me settle down in my lovely ensuite bedroom and enriched me with the history of Colchester. He provided excellent customer service for all the guests of the hotel. This hotel is highly recommended, and I hope everyone who goes to Colchester Boutique Hotel will feel comfortable and delighted.
Charming, Victorian cottage in a quirky village. Equiped with everything we needed and extra touches such as Cava and treats. Enjoyed walking around the village looking at all the different architectural styles. Very convenient to be able to walk along the river path into Colchester and catch bus/train back. Loved the Castle Museum. Train to the coast was great too. Sitting on the patio with a glass of wine at the end of the day.
I liked the location, the people working their are super nice, as well as the building and the old style. I liked the style of the hotel from the building itself to the furniture but you will like only if you like traditional old styles. I don't recommend it to someone who like fancy super stars hotel. not because it is not nice but because they will put bad reviews because it won't meet their expectations
Cosy, comfortable hotel with period features within walking distance of the historic centre Colchester. Well appointed rooms. All the staff were welcoming and provided very good levels of customer service. Bar open in the evening. The breakfast was delicious. Car park on site was a little tight in places, but there was always a space available. Would definitely visit again.
The hotel was just outside Colchester off the A12. The hotel is being renovated, however we heard no construction noise during our stay. We were put in the new wing which has been beautifully renovated. We were first put into a double room and when we questioned it, the friendly receptionist changed us over to a twin. It had a huge TV and 2 comfortable 3 quarter size beds.
summer let for student accommodation. peaceful campus life, clean airy rooms. on site reception. pleasant walks, eg to wivenhoe or along the river into town. regular busses into town. colchester was more interesting than i realised. castle, churches, roman walls, parks and many interesting little streets with quirky shops and cafes.
Breakfast was exceptional with so much choice and all freely accessible. Room was very quiet but that was probably due to the thick carpet which was also in the corridors and made for a very quiet night. Bed was comfy and the room itself out excelled a comparitive hotel on the western side of Colchester.
Very nice children/pet friendly hotel. Close to Colchester city and London Stansted airport. Decent standard rooms, breakfast, dinner and swimming pool facilities.Definitely value for money. Lisa the Duty Manager was very helpful and super friendly. Recommended for a weekend away.
Good location, very well maintained hotel, spotlessly clean. Nice staff and a fantastic breakfast too! Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for somewhere to stay close to Colchester town centre. NCP car par 2 mins walk away was reasonably priced for 24 hour rate too
Great staff, very lovely hotel and good location right in the Colchester Town centre. I was kindly upgraded from to a junior suite, which was more than appropriated and unexpected. This a hotel that I would recommend and stay in again.
Wonderful stay… The hotel located nearby Essex University, and it’s not too far from Colchester city center “ 10 to 14 minutes by car”. If you wish to have a wonderful time in the English country side, then you are at the right hotel.
Very helpful staff. Helped to use the check in machine at the doors. As we were checking out early in the morning, they even cooked breakfast earlier than they supposed to. Breakfast was very delicious. Free parking for hotel guests.
Location is superb, difficult to park in Colchester and think the overnight parking is slightly expensive. Otherwise couldn’t fault the hotel. Lovely rooms, very spacious
