Experience off-grid living in one of Cornwall’s little-known beauty spots in a piece of rare British motoring history, lovingly restored and handbuilt to create a modern yet rustic living space. Sited on a 3 acre camping meadow near the rugged north Cornish coast, pared back yet lovingly furnished with everything you’ll need, this is sure to become your new favourite rural retreat. Come and escape from the stresses of modern life; dreamers, star-gazers and wild-at-hearts welcome. You will be staying in a piece of British motoring history, a 1979 Bedford CF that we have lovingly restored and rebuilt in a style that pays homage to its roots as a 70’s horse box- think part gypsy wagon, part woodland Hobbit-hole with a vintage twist. Rustle up a romantic evening meal together in the fully-equipped kitchen with hob, oven and sink or snuggle up in the cosy lounge area and unwind with a good book and a cup of tea. Fill up a picnic hamper and hit the beach at sunset, or settle into comfy camping beanbags and light a fire in our original Indian kadai fire pit. Wash off from the day’s adventures in a hot rainfall shower, then curl up in the over-cab double bed and stargaze out of the roof dome until you fall asleep. The camper is sited in a back-to-basics camping meadow with drinking water, outdoor showers and compost toilets. Sitting far enough from the rest of the site that you can enjoy your own space, yet close enough that you can gather round the communal fire pit with a beer of an evening. Important: The camper is accessed via steps and the bed requires climbing into from the bench seat; please consider this before booking! If the over-cab bed isn't suitable, you will have the option to make up a bed from the seating area instead (see photos). There is currently no heating in the camper but we provide extra blankets and hot water bottles, and are looking to install a wood stove for the winter. Only low-power appliances can be run in the camper (e.g. phones & laptops).
When we're not travelling around Europe in our camper van we love to be back home in Cornwall, and have always enjoyed hosting people from all over the world in our home, showing them Cornwall's hidden gems. We've spent the last 6 years travelling around 32 different countries in our van, and are now taking a short break from travelling before planning our next trip. We're both photographers who particularly enjoy photo-documentaries, and if we're not working on our next blog you'll more than likely find us outside working on our own van.
Our Bedford camper is centrally located in rural West Cornwall, a short drive from the A30 and the nearest amenities with views across the Red River Valley and the rugged North Cliffs. Both Portreath and Gwithian, two of Cornwall's finest surfing beaches with golden sands, are a 10 minute drive from your doorstep. Just 20 minutes away by car is the beautiful harbour town of St Ives, but you're never more than an hour away from any of Cornwall's iconic landmarks. You can pick up the coastal path nearby, wander through Tehidy Woods and feed the squirrels, spend the day on the beach, or learn to surf at GAS, the Gwithian Academy of Surfing. Whatever you enjoy, this is the perfect base to explore the area from, and there are many places to visit if you enjoy local Cornish food, or simply just want to enjoy the nature and Cornwall's beautiful landscapes. To really enjoy the area and what Cornwall has to offer you will want to drive, however the main bus and rail routes including those to St Ives all run from nearby Camborne (1 mile). Unfortunately there are no bus routes currently running near to the site, so please bear this in mind when booking. The coastal path is approximately a 45 minute walk away (2 miles).
