Beautifully decorated room and facilities - really exceeded expectations. Every detail was well considered including the bed linen, towels, lotion, soap, tea and coffee making facilities. Within easy walking distance of the city center and beautiful cathedral as well. 100% recommended.

This is the 2nd time we have stayed at the Bath Arms before Christmas. The hotel restaurant and pub area are so inviting: two fires going, lovely decorations and fine food and beverages. The community support for the restaurant is obvious, and the staff are helpful and conversational. Comfortable beds, nice toiletries and parking is easy, behind the hotel. Can't wait to come back.

Take the tour with a cathedral volunteer, so many interesting points thart we never would have noticed without our guide. Expect scaffolding, I've been twice 41 years apart & both times there has been scaffolding across the front. Apparently it's roughly up every 2 years

Lived there for 3 years 2003 to 06 & still get that 'at home' feeling when I visit. Was a taxi driver over the period & still get recognised & greeted when I walk down the high street.

If you visit Wells, I suggest paying a visit to the cathedral, there is a small charge to get in, but it's definitely worth it! I recommend going and looking at the wonderful clock, it's the second oldest in the whole of Britain, it's is the oldest clock with a face in the whole of Britain. If you do get to see the clock, wait for it to strike the quarter hour, you'll be pleasantly surprised!

Tip: Do a free guided tour, not just wander. Our guide was replete with information and interesting details. Another tick off my bucket list! Our light lunch at the cathedral was very agreeable. I wish we'd had time for the adjacent Bishop's Palace and Garden.

    Still spectacular.

Still spectacular. As of June 2021 there is scaffolding up most of the cathederal front and the historic clock for renovation of the stonework. I expect that this will be the case for some time so expect not to see the exterior in all of it's glory. However the interior remains spectacular.

The Ancient Gatehouse is indeed ancient dating back to the 16th century. My room was on the first floor with an outstanding view of Wells Cathedral across the green. Dinner in the restaurant was wonderful. Central Wells was only metres away as was the Cathedral and Vicars Close. Car parking wasn't a problem if arriving in the late afternoon.

This hotel/restaurant is housed in the walls of Wells Cathedral precinct. The stairs and passages to the space above the 14th century arch have been safely and cleverly adapted. We loved climbing those ancient spiral steps complete with a modern stout rope handhold. Real atmosphere. Everything you needed in the room and quaint but modern bathroom a few steps down. The briefing was more than adequate.

The hotel was in a very old historic building and its terrace and some rooms directly faced Wells Cathedral for outstanding views. Location could not be better. The breakfast was good but a bit expensive - but so was Wells in general. We ate at the restaurant one night, on the terrace and it was very good. The restaurant is very popular.

If you don't know this hotel, then it's difficult to describe what is so special about it. It's called "The Ancient Gatehouse" and we were in the gatehouse itself, built in about 1435. Our room had in all likelihood been continuously occupied since 1435. That puts it up with the earliest Oxford colleges and Royal Palaces and castles. It's quite a thought, all that history. And it's a stones throw from the medieval city centre, the view from the bedroom is of the west end of Wells Cathedral.
