Alti Santorini was the best hotel we've ever stayed on. The views are just as amazing as advertised, the pool was warm even on the colder weather (early may). I do believe this is the most impressive viewpoint of the island, since you are at Caldera. Staff is superb. Would recommend renting a car, which is quite easy to do.

Right off the ferry you will find a group of people enthusiastically trying to scam you telling you that there are no busses or taxis and that they are your only solution. While they may be right about the taxis, there is public bus for every ferry. The scammer bus costs upwards of 20 euro (and then driver to me to wrong location and wanted a cash tip to take me to right location) and the public bus costs 2.

Terrible experience:

Terrible experience: > Arrive early: no timetables or listing of incoming and outbound vessels will force you to seek info at offices of ferry lines with respect to time and pier. > Dress lightly: insufficient sheltered waiting rooms and restrooms. Many waiting areas are simply an area covered by a gigantic tent flysheet. > Don't overhydrate: lack of restrooms may force you to consume at some bar to access a decent bathroom. > Use closed shoes: hordes of people will trample over your beach sandals or flip-flops. > Use rugged luggage with rugged wheels: pier pavement are in terrible shape. Access ramps to ferries are textured for vehicles. Both will cause considerable wear and tear of your wheeled luggage. Border on both sides of access ramps are textured like sandpaper, and will cause less damage. > Have someone strong in your party: luggage may have to be carried up stairwells to passenger cabin, depending on ferry. > Do not store your suitcase on its wheels or flat in cargo hold. If on wheels, luggage will roll. If lying flat, people will pile their luggage on top of yours. > Be swift: ferries arrive, unload, load, and leave in incredibly short time. You will probably check in when vessel has already left port Think ahead. You can now relax.

As soon as we stepped off a ferry we were immediately surrounded by the local taxi drivers, who were quite obnoxious and rude, unfortunately. Unlike Naxos port, you can't just step off and walk or take a regular bus easily.

We never before traveled via ferry so it was a chaotic experience. A mad rush of humanity on and off the ferry. Not for the faint of heart. On our sail from Athens to Santorini we disembarked at the wrong island (announcements are hard to hear and not displayed anywhere,) the weather caused confusion and deland was unable to get to Santorini for 24 hours. This caused us grief. Lost an entire day of vacation rescheduling, finding accommodation for the night and rebooking another ferry to Santorini.

If you take an early morning ( leaves at 7.30 am ) Blue star ferry, from Piraeus port. Take a train to the port , walk to the terminal ,just cross the street, go buy ticket at Blue star ferry counter around 50 euro.If you buy online you pay way more. Secondly avoid teksi at the port who try to convince you that its a long walk. Do NOt entertain them. Because there is bus shuttle to take you to the ferry. No hassle. Its an 8 hour ride to Santorini, ferry stops three on the way. You arrive around 4.40 pm. There is a bus to the Fira town terminal for only 2.50 euros. From the terminal, you can walk to turn right up the street to the cobblestone street, up the hill towards a cathedral , called Thireas street, beware no street signs. From the top next Atlantic hotel is where all the best hotels and ABNB are located. We stayed at Thireas hotel, the best comfort room, with excellent service. From here you can walk into town. The best season to go is March and April, it's cool and crowds to queue for photo shoots, especially at Ios, where all the blue dome churches are. It's worth it. Take bus 2 euros from the terminal to Ios town.
