Please note that if you have a ticket to go up into the Cupola, that doesn't mean you can afterward exit into the Duomo itself. You have to leave the cathedral and then join the humongous line to enter the Cathedral. Each of the "attractions" has a separate entrance line: cupola, duomo, campanile, baptistry.
Arranged a guided tour ahead, this time. Avoided a half-day wait for tickets and a great plus was our guide, Matt, is a history geek who passed along a treasure of knowledge in three hours. Not to be missed, guided or not.
book early-timed entry sells out very quickly upto 2 weeks in advance lots of steps so be sure you can manage especially if it's hot. however great experience if you do it both for the art work on the inner dome and the views of the outer dome
This piazza is usually crowded with tourists taking photos of the Duomo and Baptistry but is a must when in Florence. The skill of these builders is remarkable and beautiful to behold....with no computers!
This is the best place of the city in all respects - to feel the history, to watch people's reaction at great mankind achievements, to realize what that great descenders did for the mankind's culture.
Best to visit in the evening, when the temps are cooler and the area a little quieter. An incredible area to go for pre-dinner drinks or for a meal and not as expensive as one might think. We had a delicious dinner overlooking the Duomo and taking in the ambience of Florence and listening to the many 'street performers'. A trip to the Lindt shop for chocolates is a must for chocoholics, as is the Hot Chocolate - heaven in a cup! We had it, even in the middle of Summer, and it did not disappoint!
