We really love this place. It was right next to the lake and had a gorgeous view. My family especially love the private onsen and made good use of it every night we were there. I wish we could stay longer. There were even free snacks and drinks in the fridge, which was a pleasant surprise. My kids loved the big projector and would watch youtube on that. Although we didn’t get a chance to use the balcony, it was spacious and even had a foot bath outside with a great view of the lake and Mt Fuji. The place provided free parking, was close to a convenient store, and had ample space for our luggage.

We loved the atmosphere and the ambiance. The staff were super nice and accommodating, especially when we were travelling with our infant. The food was very good and the room was very spacious. The private Ryokan was nice and had an amazing view.

Yama No Chaya is a small ryokan located in Tonosawa in the Hakone area. The inn itself is roughly a 10-15 minute walk away from the Tonosawa train station, or roughly a 5 minute walk by the nearest bus stop. You have to cross a suspension bridge to reach the inn itself and then uphill on a curving road. When I crossed the bridge, a staff member was waiting to get my bags and escort me. The inn itself has a few rooms and public areas. There is a bar, a balcony area that is accessible during the warmer seasons, several public baths, and one private bath. There are also manga and dvds for use, along with a small gift shop, refreshments, and ice cream to purchase. All the baths are equally lovely and shift between being accessible for men or woman only at certain times of the day. The room itself was lovely - I opted for the basic room with a private outdoor hot spring bath which was the highlight of the space. There was a tatami room where meals were served and a bedroom that looked out onto the bath and nature outside. The staff were amazing and incredibly accommodating. I was greeted by everyone and my attendant Rosalie was a rockstar. I never felt so pampered before and she would always go the extra mile to assist you. The meal was overall a great experience with breakfast being better in my opinion. Each meal was a multi-course experience and keep in mind that it can be a bit challenging for those with a western palette.

Full disclosure - this place is much fancier than the places we typically stay. It's expensive - but it was worth every yen. The facilities are luxurious. The food is an absolute marvel - creative, beautifully presented, and delicious. The private onsen on our balcony overlooking the ocean is the perfect way to relax. And the staff were all so incredibly kind to us and our children (especially Mayu). Our few days here were amongst the very best we had in Japan. Highly recommend this place for a relaxing, memorable splurge.
