FAQs about hotels in Lake District

Poetic Artistry at its Best

The inspiration behind many a poet, the serene Lake District has majestic peaks and glorious lakes that form the UK’s largest and most visited national park.

A particular favourite of Wordsworth, Windermere is England’s longest lake and her waters are still plied by historic boats. With a range of luxury Lake District hotels and a Beatrix Potter Museum, the town is connected by cable-operated car ferry to a spot close to Near Sawrey where Miss Potter once lived. Near the lake’s northern tip is popular Ambleside, home of the Stock Ghyll Force waterfall.

A road goes north from here past picturesque Grasmere and Thirlmere lake to Keswick. Set by Derwent Water, this pretty town is overlooked by Skiddaw, while Scafell Pike – England’s highest mountain – is to its south-west. Bassenthwaite lake is north-west, and Glenridding to the east is on the shores of the popular sailing spot of Ullswater, watched over by Helvellyn.

In the Southern Lakes, Coniston is a small village by a lake offering watersports. South-west is the port town of Barrow-in-Furness, and also by the sea is Grange-over-Sands with its long promenade. Kendal is known for its tasty mint cake and has a museum of Lakeland life, as well as a good range of Lake District hotels with pools on Booking.com.

The perfect getaway after the hustle and bustle of Christmas - and probably the quietest time of the year to enjoy The Lakes without the crowds. Check out Brysons (delicious food and very generous sized sandwiches), The Cornish pie shop (great produce and service) and Roly’s Fudge shop where you can see the creamy, crumbly fudge being made.

Keswick is lovely.

Keswick is lovely. We like to go at Christmas as the vibe is amazing. Really enjoyed the wine bar but a bad experience at the back baaa(which has previously been fine) and subsequent non-response by owners ‘inn on the square’ has soured our views. The weatherspoons there is singing, set in a court house with cells that you can sit in!

Lots of choice for places to eat, great welcoming pubs. Plenty of shops. You can park up and use the the local transport to get round the lakes, it very reliable and cheap. You also have access to the lake, with their many boat trips. Great local walks, you have water falls, riverside walks, stepping stones they are endless, easy access to mountain range. Something for everyone

Small but compact village. Lots of shops, art, books, gifts. Good choice of places to eat. Beautiful old church and historical grounds. Famous Grassmere Gingerbread shop should not be missed. Sadly the big garden centre shop has changed hands, now sells mainly local woolen goods and ceramics, quite expensive and for the space, boring. Good parking, unless high season, when it becomes a struggle.

There is a very interesting Dock museum at Barrow that is free to enter.. It has beautiful models of some of the ships that were built there and displays about the history of the docks and area. There is a small cafetiere. There is a very good Restaurant called Hartleys which is in Dalton-in-Furness which is not too far away as the main places to eat in Barrow were sports pubs.

The area is ideal for visiting the southern Lakes, the Cumbria peninsular, easy access from the M6. Spectacular views of mountains, great opportunity for outdoor activities such as walking, cycling, canoeing, running. Most attractions have restricted opening hours out of main season, so research well and you wont be disappointed. Even when there was inclement weather, there"s enough in nearby towns to occupy you. Shops, Theatres, cinema etc
