Don't worry about going out of town to thermal sites when you can walk around the lakeside and park and see geothermal action for free. There's also a wealth of street art around town mixed in with a great range of shops and cafes. The iSITE staff were very helpful with planning trips and activities and talked me through using local buses: they also called a taxi for me at one point. DEFINITELY do go to Mitai Maori Village's cultural evening. You might think it sounds expensive. I promise you it's totally worth it. This experience was one of the highlights of my 3 week tour of NZ and one of the first things I tell people about.Guest review byElizabethUnited Kingdom - 8.0

Traffic lights at the roundabouts that’s something we don’t see everyday. Chilled town and friendly people , I’m guessing it’s alot busier over summer . Fernland spas , relaxing , affordable, refreshing spas. Make that a must do while you are in town.Guest review byAnonymousNew Zealand - 10.0

Lovely little town with everything you might need shop wise.
Lovely little town with everything you might need shop wise. A hop, skip and a jump to Ohope beach which is absolutely gorgeous. Awateri trains an absolute must activity. Took our kids to the Awateri hot pools which were okay. Probably would not stay at camp ground. We stayed at Riverside camping ground which was great.Guest review byAndreaNew Zealand - 10.0

At this time of the year it was pretty quiet but we had our 2 granddaughters with us and the slow pace was nice. We ate at the RSA and everybody enjoyed their meal We stayed at the Tasman Holiday Park - Waihi Beach and it had a lot of facilities for the people.Guest review byArthur JohnNew Zealand - 10.0
Ohope Beach is perfect!
Ohope Beach is perfect! Great for long walks or biking, surfing and swimming. The beach is also patrolled by life guards. There is a great cafe, Moki, which does great coffee and food with good service. It is relatively quiet which is great if you want a very relaxing weekend. Lots of people on the beach just chilling. There is an excellent bush walk from the bottom of the hill at Ohope beach. Whakatane is a 5 minute drive over the hill if you want to go shopping or have a walk along the river. Try the best fish and chips in NZ from Gibbos on the wharf in Whakatane.Guest review byMarieNew Zealand - 10.0
Despite recent news coverage Ōpōtiki is an idyllic location.
Despite recent news coverage Ōpōtiki is an idyllic location. It has most amenities, the locals are great. Small town shopping as expected but is the gateway to the East Coast with scenery to die for, fishing and swimming or just time out at the beach along this coastal stretch.Guest review byBridgetNew Zealand - 8.0

The drive to Katikati was terribly slow because of the road works. But we were greeted by the restaurant staff whom made us feel calmer & welcome. The public bar did not disappoint either. Some very friendly fellas chatted to us immediately & recommended the restaurant for a meal. We loved all the paintings & photos all around the place. Such interesting history available for us to learn. We will definetly be back to stay a bit longer & ask for out book to be signed...The Great NZ Pub Crawl. Thanks for a memorable experience.Guest review byJeffNew Zealand - 8.0

This was just a lovely place in the country, handy for visiting friends and family in the city and having a break at the same time. Omokoroa within a short driving distance has all the restaurants and shops you could want as well as a lovely beach environment.
