South Dakota

South Dakota’s best-known sight is Mount Rushmore, its monumental presidents symbolize American history against the dramatic Black Hills. Known for vast prairies, fossil-rich Badlands, and Old West spirit, the state delivers easygoing outdoor adventures and cultural stops for families and solo travelers alike.

Highlights are Mount Rushmore and Badlands Park. Don’t miss a wildlife loop in Custer State Park to spot bison. Stay in Rapid City for Black Hills and Mount Rushmore, Sioux Falls for flights, river falls, and family fun, and Deadwood for Old West history and nightlife.

The staff and hotel were great. We could not have asked for a better experience. We arrived for our honeymoon to a room upgrade. There were not many people when we stayed so we didn't have to wait for anything. The restaurant was great. Food was delicious, reasonably priced, and the staff was wonderful. We will definitely return. We made day trips to Mt Rushmore, Custer, Badlands, and Devils Tower.

Rapid City is a comfortable-sized city. Traffic was not bad.
Rapid City

Rapid City is a comfortable-sized city. Traffic was not bad. There are plenty of places to eat in town, and there are nice parks and attractions. Access to the Black Hills is very convenient, with Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, the Crazy Horse Memorial, the Badlands, and Devil's Tower, Wyoming, a relatively short drive away. The Presidential Walk is a nice feature in town, and the Depression-era Dinosaur Park affords great views of the city.

Deadwood

Deadwood was awesome. I learned a lot and had fun too. I'll definitely be back, but I won't stay at the Miners Hotel again. The Days of 76 Rodeo is one of my favorites and I've been to several rodeos already this year.

Location was perfect. Could walk to stores & dining Three stories and no elevator so if elderly or have small children or have lots of luggage, be sure to request ground floor when you make reservations and make them early. Boss pizza was excellent!

Custer

The town of Custer is cute with a few decent restaurants. One decent restaurant was Custer Wolf. However, the benefit of Custer is being centrally located with respect to Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park and Wind Cave National Park. Other attractions a little farther out are Mammoth Dig in Hot Springs and Bear County USA in Rapid City. Badlands National Park should not be missed but it is a little too far (but doable) for day trips.

Got to see Mount Rushmore and Custer State Park; we did check out Crazy Horse, but there’s plenty of work to be done on it. A lot of beautiful land here, I’m glad we drove to see it. We still have more to check out on this trip.

Spearfish

We visited Spearfish Canyon. It was beautiful. The walk down to see the waterfall was 1.5 miles. It was steep at some spots but would level off to where almost everyone should be able to make the trek. We saw Mountain Goats. Great scenery. Loved it!

Wall

We were visiting the national parks. Mt Rushmore could have been 3-4 hours. Badlands at pinnacle point for the best sunset and dark skies. Definitely would choose noche trail if you need to only do one. There were a lot of kids on that trail under age 10 and did well.

Lead

There are many things to do in the area, much of them are closed in the winter, except for outdoor activities. We have been there many times throughout the year, summer is always hopping with something going on like Hot Harley Nights, the Corvette rally, Sturgis week, Mustang rally, off road 4x4s etc. Winter time it is snow mobiling and skiing.
