Located among undulating meadows and Chianti vineyards, Siena shines as a jewel of the Tuscan Renaissance, and has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Experience the famous Palio di Siena horse race, catch the pulse of the city at Piazza del Campo, visit the beautiful Duomo cathedral…and fall in love with this charming city!
Founded by Etruscans around 900 BC, the city was first conquered by Romans and later by Lombards. The Middle Ages saw it becoming the independent and flourishing Republic of Siena, until its annexation to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.
The economic difficulties that followed turned out to be a blessing for the preservation of its historic centre. Adorned with frescoes by Ghirlandaio and bass-reliefs by Donatello, Lorenzo Ghiberti, and Jacopo della Quercia, the Duomo represents the highest expression of this well-kept legacy. The shell-shaped Piazza del Campo, with the Palazzo Pubblico and the Gaia Fountain, is still the heart and soul of the city. Follow the labyrinth of narrow streets and passages that irradiate from there and you will be enchanted by its romantic atmosphere from ancient times.
The closest airports are Peretola Airport in Florence and Galileo Galilei International Airport in Pisa, though Guglielmo Marconi Airport in Bologna is also well connected. While planning your trip, don’t forget to check out the Siena accommodation deals on Booking.com!

The town is just large enough to offer lots to see but small enough to walk and explore. The duomo is gorgeous and the Piazza del Campo is a great place to eat and people watch. Parking is a challenge but taxis are fairly easy to get. We did struggle one rainy night since everyone seemed to be needing a cab. I googled getting a cab in Siena and found a phone number that helped us!

Great central location to the Tuscany region.
Great central location to the Tuscany region. A bit difficult to navigate through the central / historic area if not familiar with street signs, regulations, parking etc. Can be stressful without proper planning and local input for directions

Great town to visit, plenty of places to eat and some small supermarkets. It possible to get away from the crowds by wandering around the back streets. The botanical garden is a gem and not visited much - perfect for a picnic. And there is a modern art gallery - Palazzo delle Papesses - really worth visiting despite being a bit expensive!

Siena, is a beautiful working local city.
Siena, is a beautiful working local city. Fantastic restaurants and cafe options. Wonderful local produce shops, everyone so welcoming and helpful. The Duomo complex and Santa maria della Scala well worth visiting. We used Siena as a base to take trips out to the beautiful Tuscan countryside, towns and villages, also wine tasting at Winery San Giorgio a Lapi and visiting a cheese farm Fattoria Corzano & Paterno, returning to Siena for the evening and wonderful dinners.

Siena is such a beautiful city.
Siena is such a beautiful city. We stayed for two nights which was perfect. We had one full day and two half days which was great to visit the main spots and enjoy the wonderful food. Be sure to check out the Duomo and take the private tour to the top! Our favourite restaurant was Osteria Cice- be sure to book in advance!
For a bar in the main square, check out the gelateria. The prices are a lot lower and they serve a lovely aperol spritz.

The catherdral is breathtakingly beautiful it’s so pretty. The restaurants in the area are wonderful. It’s a really delightful place and I’m so glad I went there. Wear good shoes, there are lots of hills and leave time to find a parking space.

The hotel is located near the city walls and so pedestrian access to the iconic buildings and piazzas in Siena is very easy. The concierge provided a useful map. The staff were all friendly.
The breakfast was continental style and consisted of croissants, cakes, yoghurt, cereals and alike. The bed was comfortable and everything was clean. Although we didn’t use the mini-fridge, it contained soft drinks and small bottles of wine/beer.
Stunning accommodation in the heart of Siena. Outstanding check in experience and incredibly welcoming hosts. The most comfortable bed we stayed in during the whole Italy trip!
They accommodated us last minute after the other hotel we pre-booked was so terrible we left after seeing the room.
This place in contrast was a welcome surprise. We loved our 1 night stay and would highly recommend it.

It was a comfortable hotel in a beautiful, rural setting, with friendly and helpful staff. It was a little removed from Siena, but there was a good bus service.
