The place hugely exceeded our expectations, particularly given some of the other reviews on here.
The bungalow was right on the beach. It has a decent size balcony, which provided a nice place to chill in the hammocks and gave you a place to clean your feet so you could avoid traipsing sand in. Inside the room was cool and breezy, with windows with insect screens on multiple walls, including directly by the bed, and a ceiling fan. The decor is a bit dated and could do with a cosmetic update, but it was super clean and the bed was comfortable. We slept well to the sound of the waves gently breaking each night.
By far and away the best part about staying here was the host, Mr Yahir. We have never had such good service, not even at 5 star hotels. He made himself available to check us in after 8pm on the first night, repeatedly checked in to make sure we had everything we needed, sourced and arranged special meal items for us, regularly offered us a ride into town, went with us to arrange a colectivo (even speaking with the vendor for us, as our Spanish is limited), and then dropped us off in the morning of our departure to ensure we got to the depot on time. All in all a top bloke with a clear pride and passion for his job.

Aquastar was well located right on the Malecon.
Aquastar was well located right on the Malecon. Easy walking distance to lots of restaurants. Yes, it was right on the beach; but, not an area nice enough to get into the water. Too much seaweed. You had to walk to a nice beach,

Nice fishermen's village with good restaurants.
Nice fishermen's village with good restaurants. Very rustic in terms of hotels and restaurants.
The beach is clean and nice, clean water. However, it does suffer from the same problem of all beaches from Cancun up to here: lots of seawater. So cleaneless will depend how often they clean the seaweed.
Overall is a place to go once; no need to return, but glad I went.
Food cost can be expensive for what they are.

Sleepy boring town with nothing to do but relax and enjoy...
Sleepy boring town with nothing to do but relax and enjoy the sea. There are a bunch of snorkeling and diving locations if you're into that.
An excellent place to slow down and forget about the world.
A few quirks:
The nearby waterpark was closed because there was no cruise ship.
Same for the dolphin park, and by extension the entire touristy cruise port, is off-limits for 'regular' tourism according to the guard at the entrance there. So you can't get your fridge magnets and tshirts from there...
Half of the town is closed when there are no cruise ships. As if regular tourism doesn't matter or is not worth working for.
The difference with restaurants, shops and tours being offered was night and day when a cruise boat docked on Sunday.
Good stuff:
A laidback atmoshphere thorughout town. Not much annoying sales people. Some decent restaurants that have a good price/quality balance.
Other than the relaxed and fun strip of mahahual there isn't much to do. Which is great if you just want to relax and enjoy some food or drinks like we did.
And for that, our trip was too short (3 nights) but with the average hotel we had and few restaurant options that were open and not overpriced, 3 nights was just right I suppose.
The ride to Mahahual is an easy one, about 60KM from the main road, and that's the time where the world literally disappears in the background as you enter and enjoy the slow pace of Mahahual.

The best part of Mahahual other than the beaches is taking a trip with "Amigos del Mar Mahahual" to the atolon "Banco del Chinchorro", to Snorkel and or scuba dive. The company is very professional and have great equipment. The place is the biggest coral reef in the caribean has a lot of history and it is amazing. It was my first time snorkeling and I am oficially a fan and i will gladly go back there!!!
The town is very calm and friendly. There are days when cruise ships arrive and it becomes noisy but entertaining. Great choice of restaurants with a surprising offer of great cuisine for diner. Yaya, Malecon 21, or the restaurant at the 40 canones Hotel

More could be done to improve Mahahual, I visited Mahahual about 15 years ago and it was quiet, peaceful and clean. I was quite disappointed in how run down it had become; it was idyllic and not crazy like Playa Del Carmen and Cancun so I wanted my husband to experience lovely beaches etc, but this wasn't meant to be.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting a truly spectacular beach that left me in awe. The beach was situated near a beautiful coral reef, and the water was crystal clear and calm, making it perfect for swimming and snorkeling. The soft, white sand was incredibly inviting, and I spent many hours lounging on the beach and soaking up the sun.
One of the things that really stood out to me about this beach was how peaceful and serene it was. Unlike some of the more crowded beaches I've visited, this one felt like a true paradise, with plenty of space to relax and unwind. The lack of waves also made it perfect for families with young children or anyone who wants to enjoy the water without worrying about getting tossed around.
Another thing that impressed me was the sheer natural beauty of the area. The coral reef was home to an incredible array of marine life, including colorful fish and sea turtles, which made for an unforgettable snorkeling experience. And with the stunning scenery all around, it was easy to forget about the outside world and just enjoy the moment.
Overall, I would highly recommend this beach to anyone looking for a peaceful and picturesque getaway. It truly is a slice of paradise that I will never forget.
Chino, Alicia, Marlene and Diego were amazingly friendly, helpful and fun. These people are cool. I can't imagine a better group to spend time with in paradise. Everything about this place and these people make me want to live here forever. Our favorite time in Mexico was definitely spent here. If you want to go somewhere to chill out completely, book a month. Our group was from Argentina, Germany, France, Lithuania, Mexico, and the US and all were very comfortable together. Thank you all for making our visit magical.
The main thing about the hotel is the people running it. Everyone was super friendly and already on the first night we felt at home. Carla was a great host and invited us straight to a Christmas dinner with half of Mahahual. This way we felt like being part of the community. They also provide you with access to 2 different beach clubs which is amazing since you can use the equipment and get breakfast on the beach. Again, the staff at the Chilangoluense was super nice! Thank you, Carla!
Spent 10 wonderful days here living right next to the beach. The place is isolated and depends on solar for electricity and is approx 8 km from town so is very quiet save for the birds and lapping waves. It helps if you have a car. Closest restaurant is a 20 minute walk, though breakfast is provided at the hotel. Excellent wifi. Much thanks to Debbie, Anika and the 3 dogs for creating an excellent atmosphere. Loved our relaxing time there
It was a HUGE room with a delightfully unexpected partial view of the ocean and the beach was not even a block away. The hotel is decorated so uniquely with beautiful artwork everywhere. We loved walking around the hallways and lobby and seeing it all. The front desk and housekeeping staff were very kind. We liked it so much we ended up staying two extra nights!
Beautiful place on the sea shore. The hotel offers beach service. There are great restaurants on the ground floor and around the hotel, so we didn't have to use the kitchen in our room :-). It is necessary to take a boat trip on a coral reef snorkeling trip. The hotel is at the end of a busy class of hotels and restaurants ...
Suzette was the nicest and most competent host, she helped us organize everything from snorkeling to cab and bus. The location is perfect, quiet and right and the beach but still only a few walking minutes from the town center. The hotel’s shared areas are very nice, the room and bathroom were good.
Cottage in the center of touristic area in Mahahual. Close to restaurants, diving companies, shops, to the beach 10 seconds, with private sunbeds. The room had very nice decoration. Breakfasts were good and coffe was really good and made in the press style.
The hotel is very modern and the rooms spacious, with both WiFi and AC working perfectly. The maintenance guy was very friendly and helpful. The fact that the hotel isn't located right by the beach was a plus during Sargasso season.
Everything was perfect, sea view grom the room, nice beach. In the hotel you can get a free kayak to swim in the sea, which was very nice. You can also rent snoorkeling equipment if you need. The area od quiet and cery relaxing.
lovely hotel with a beautiful pool and relax area
just 1 min to the beach
nice Café in the hotel when you can buy a very good breakfast

the room was cleaned every day

The room had an incredible view, the beach is right in front of the hotel, the staff is unique. Thye have a really good kitchen and the included breakfast is delicious!
Great location, a beach club right next to the hotel, friendly and helpful personnel, a nice swimming pool on the rooftop, money safe to keep personal stuff
