The hotel was in a great location. Lovely, friendly staff. Beer garden was nice to relax in the evening under patio heaters and the wood fired pizza was excellent

Room was fine although compact and a bit tired compared with Travelodge and Premier, with a small double bed ( not had less than a king size bed in a hotel room for many years!) Also old fashioned warm air heater which we switched on on arrival as it was getting cold. - I suppose it’s more cost effective than central heating. Room had everything we needed and was comfortable enough for one night but I’ve had better rooms for cheaper. However excellent power shower and a very good breakfast included in price made it better value.

Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once allowed access to the city.
Walk the walls for wonderful views towards the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.
A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even have a go at archaeology yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.
Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around 30 minutes’ drive away is Castle Howard, a stately home with over 1000 acres of grounds.
Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there is a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guest houses in York and the outskirts available on Booking.com.

I felt like I was in a fairy tale - everything there is absolutely magical! From the fabulous ghost tour we took from York Minster to The Shambles, it was delightful! And of course I stopped by Betty's for some lemon cake and then back again for their fruitcake. I bought a dragon egg with a dragon inside at one of the shops that looks like it is part of Diagon Alley - in fact, all of the shops in The Shambles look like they are right out of Harry Potter, but not the cheesy commercialized Harry Potter shops one sees so often - these are the real deal - with things being sold in black jars and cauldrons and steam is roiling in the center of the store (where I bought the dragon egg).
Take the little boat ride up and back a stretch of the River Ouse - it is peaceful and has a bit of history thrown in.
Walk along the city wall for views!
Grab a latte at the fanciest Starbucks you have likely ever been in.
Oh, and definitely grab fish and chips at The Hole in the Wall, which is right next to the quirky and fun (Wind in the Willows vibe for sure) hotel, The Fat Badger.
Getting around York is very easy - it is laid out very logically.
What I would avoid next time is walking with my suitcase from my hotel to the train station - though it was small, the streets are very "cobbly." I would have taken a taxi to avoid that slight unpleasantness, but that is the only thing I would change about my fabulous time in York. Oh, and stay as close to York Minster as possible - the shops are so darling and The Shambles is just a five minute walk from there.

We were very impressed with this clean, compact city.
We were very impressed with this clean, compact city. Easy to walk to the various sites, though plenty of buses available. We took the city tour bus all the way round first to get our bearings, then used it again in the next 24 hours. Our three hour visit to the National Railway Museum was wonderful, as was York Minster, both inside and out. Lovely views from walking the walls and fascinating facts from the Jorvik Centre. The locals were friendly and helpful to tourists.

York Minster was beautiful and full of history, well worth the entrance fee. I did the Hop on Hop bus which was great. The streets and other buildings in the historical part are fascinating. A very pretty city and not over crowded like Bath. I visited 2 National Trust properties nearby. The Jorvik Centre looked good but I couldn't get in on the day I wanted so its best to book a few days in advance. It's best not to take the car and the Park and Ride Services are very efffecient and cheap

We were on the edge of York with two really great places to visit - the Cold War Bunker and Colgate Windmill - one literally on the doorstep and the other a short walk away.
Both have lovely staff and are not at all expensive.
Michel couldn’t have been friendlier. Very helpful and happy to take the time to chat and suggest places to go.
Breakfast was fantastic
Very relaxed atmosphere. It’s not the fanciest of hotels but then it doesn’t claim to be a 5 star.
Had a great stay and if we go back to York again we’d be highly likely to stay there again.
The leisure facilities available provided a lovely addition to our break away. The staff were great and very helpful. The location of the hotel was in walling distance from York City centre.
The king-sized bed was comfortable and a good addition to the room.
The hotel is lovely, my room was clean and comfortable, and the host was really friendly. The location is good, just about 10 minutes from the gorgeous city centre of York. I enjoyed the stay very much, and I am sad that I could not afford to stay longer.
The hotel was excellent; the location is perfect for accessing York City Centre with practically everything you would want in walking distance, the room was of a high quality and exceptionally clean, and the staff were very friendly and helpful.
Stayed the first time because they sponsored my sons Rugby team. Have stayed in two other York hotels but I just love the friendliness and ambiance of the Moxy and its convenience to the Minster and city centre. All the Staff are delightful.
