Went to Shimoda mid Sept which was lean season for summer adventure so less people around. It offers good beaches and many water activities. Stayed for a week which gives us relaxing time to enjoy the beach and places to see.

Great town right on the coast, has a number of great beaches nearby and beautiful rocky coastlines and cliffs to see. It is more of a tourist town though, so expect prices of things to be high. Be ready to hear constantly about Commodore Perry and the Black Ships! Some things require you to sign up or buy tickets well in advance; it's worth looking up anything you're interested in trying beforehand to see if it does.
Best coffee we had was at the Hana Cafe, best food was the South Cafe.

We very much enjoyed our stay at the Beach Inn Shirahama.
We very much enjoyed our stay at the Beach Inn Shirahama. It's right across the street from a lovely beach and the breakfast was quite nice. We loved the 2 outdoor onsens that are built on the 1F. Great to watch the stars from there amidst the treetops!
There is a common area with an open kitchen where you can prepare your own meal. They have all basic tools and cutlery, plates, cups.
Location is okay, still need to drive to the beaches around but after dinner, we took a nice walk back to the hotel which was nice too. The married couple owner is so nice and made it feel like home and they are very flexible unlike those traditional Japanese hotel where they have a lot of rules.
It's in a very quiet location that is a short walk to Ohama beach. The cottage was gorgeous and the kids loved sleeping in the loft. The owners were amazing and responsive to our needs. They even offered to help us when our car broke down in downtown Shimoda. They offer rentals for different equipment you could use at the beach if you want and even brought us vegan banana bread one morning! Highly recommend!
This hotel was in a great location and had a great view. Right along a beautiful beach and the view was amazing. The rooms and bathrooms looked a little older but it had everything needed, it was clean, and the beds were really comfortable. We stayed in a room with a tatami mat area and even the futon bed was comfortable.
From the moment we arrived, we realized this place was better than what we had expected from the photos. It felt very old-world Japan. It was dignified, polite, sprawling, and comfortable. The onsen were excellent, the gardens were nice to walk through, and staff were very courteous and helpful. We hope to go back.
Excellent place to stay in Shirahama Beach. Owner was lovely, check in and out were super easy. Comfy bed. Board rentals available. Really convenient location across the road from the beach. Breakfast was nice. Great little cafe called Irie Coffee and Sea. Would highly recommend this Inn and cafe.
The property’s gardens were stunning, as were the views of the beaches. It is within walking distance of the Shimoda’s park and aquarium, which provided my girlfriend and I activities to do. The breakfast was outstanding and had a variety of foods to choose from. Friendly and helpful staff.
We enjoyed what appeared to be a traditional Japanese breakfast offered buffet style. There were many offerings and we enjoyed sampling many of the items. While the hotel was older, it had plenty of traditional character. We had a water view and enjoyed listening to the waves rolling in.
Good Onsen(Hot spring) hotel near the very popular Shirahama beach in Shimoda. you can experience traditional Japanese inn including Japanese style breakfast and dinner with bathing facilities. I recommend this specially for group of people.
Big rooms with Beautiful ocean view, close to Perry road, has a shuttle bus from and to the station, breakfast buffet is very good with great variety of food Japanese and western, very friendly staff,
Beautiful view, lovely property, excellent pool, great breakfast, peaceful onsen, and easy walk to Shirahama Beach. Rooms were well air conditioned and equipped, despite the smaller size.
Location is great with a beautiful view as it sits on a hill. Very close to Shirahama beach. The host is very caring and helpful and has many tips on what to visit/see.
Nice hotel by the port and 10mins walk from train station. Nice onsen in the hotel. Large variety of food for breakfast and dinner. Free bike hire to explore the town.
I am surely recommend Guesthouse in Shimoda. Staying there was nice. Good location, many sightseeing around, hospitality owners make my experience in hostel enjoyable
