Went to Shimoda mid Sept which was lean season for summer adventure so less people around. It offers good beaches and many water activities. Stayed for a week which gives us relaxing time to enjoy the beach and places to see.

Great town right on the coast, has a number of great beaches nearby and beautiful rocky coastlines and cliffs to see. It is more of a tourist town though, so expect prices of things to be high. Be ready to hear constantly about Commodore Perry and the Black Ships! Some things require you to sign up or buy tickets well in advance; it's worth looking up anything you're interested in trying beforehand to see if it does.
Best coffee we had was at the Hana Cafe, best food was the South Cafe.

We very much enjoyed our stay at the Beach Inn Shirahama.
We very much enjoyed our stay at the Beach Inn Shirahama. It's right across the street from a lovely beach and the breakfast was quite nice. We loved the 2 outdoor onsens that are built on the 1F. Great to watch the stars from there amidst the treetops!
The staff were the best and the kindest. They were very helpful in all our needs from the shuttle to and from the hotel, the check-in, the food, and everything else. The place is also clean and very comfortable. Although there are no near konbinis, you can buy food and drinks in the place which is very convenient. Lastly, the mountain view and the surroundings of the place was very refreshing and beautiful.
Quiet location with a beautiful view. Mr. Yamamoto is an exceptional host. He was simply lovely; he speaks English, incredibly kind, and made everything effortless for us. The pension is spotlessly clean and well maintained. There is a 7-11 at the beach, so it was quite convenient. We took the bus from Shimoda station with no difficulty. It was a great stay.
Me, my friend and our kids coming here at the end of summer vacation for last 4 years. We love how it clean, how people are working and helpful there, we love onsen, we like very much location very close to beach so your kids just few steps from ocean, area for kid’s fireworks with everything you need. We even don’t want try another place for stay lately…
Awesome location. Walking distance to Shirahama beach. Clean and quiet surroundings. Clean room and toilet. Decent parking space. The manager Kazu/Smily is very polite and friendly and most importantly can speak English. He is an awesome didge player as well. The whole atmosphere at the place is amazing. The lounge area is a chill place.
- Hotel closest to Shirahama beach.
- Clean rooms
- We had a 1 year old toddler and staying in the Japanese rooms with futon meant less worrying about my kid climbing on the beds and falling over. Futon is not as soft as a bed mattress though so you might to opt for the their Western rooms if you want softer beds.
Lovely guest house! The view from the rooms is beautiful and the family running the guest house is so nice and helpful. They have surfboards, paddleboards, and bikes you can use. The walk to the beach is about 10 minutes and very scenic. Would absolutely recommend. Anytime I'm in Shimoda, I'm staying here!
Really spacious living space with a real beach house feel. Location is excellent as just a short walk to the beach and a couple of very good cafes. The house was immaculate and had all the amenity we required. Host was very helpful with advice on what to do
It was very comfortable for me and my friends. There was a lovely outdoor seating area. It was located close to a bus station and within a 10 minute walk from Shirahama Beach, restaurants, konbini, etc. Our favorite part was the gorgeous outdoor shower!
- Privileged location nearby Shirahama Beach and Seven Eleven konbini
- Nice dinner and Japanese breakfast
- Nice hot ofuro (do not recommend if you have a sunburned skin though 😅)
- Minibar in the room
- Flexibility to park the car before check-in
The staff was super great and made us feel very welcome! The location and the view from the room were amazing, I will definitely return there at some point. They made our stay in Shimoda a memory that will never fade! Thank you again!
Good location. Room was spacious with good view. Pleasant staff. Reasonable value overall. The hotel premises is very dated and a bit tired but overall on balance I think it was good value for the price.
Its location and distance to Shirahama beach was not far… good walking distance. The sea view from their balcony and dining is breathtaking while having breakfast or even at night.
The place is close to the beach, with super kind and friendly manager and lots of tea and snacks for free. The photos don’t do it justice. It was way better than I had expected!
Excellent stuff, perfect location and reasonable price - that all you need to spend a great day close to Shirahama beach! Highly recommend the place to everyone!
