I recently spent a week in Rijeka, and it turned out to be a wonderful surprise. It’s not the most obvious choice for a vacation in Croatia, but that’s exactly what makes it special. The city has a relaxed, authentic atmosphere, with a mix of history, culture, and modern life that feels very genuine. The historic center is full of charm, the harbor area is lively yet not overcrowded, and there are plenty of cozy cafés and restaurants to enjoy. It’s also a great base for day trips — from beautiful beaches and islands nearby to the scenic mountains just a short drive away. Rijeka is the kind of place that grows on you: not flashy, but warm, welcoming, and real. I would definitely recommend it for anyone looking for a different, more local experience of Croatia.Guest review byŁukasz - 10.0
I couldn’t find much information on Opatija before visiting.
I couldn’t find much information on Opatija before visiting. As we arrived, driving the stunning coastal road from Pula, we could see that this is a beautiful stretch of coast. Hotel Milenij, where we stayed. Is located in the old part of Opatija, right by the sea; and there is quite a lot of public beach (concrete bathing areas, but great for swimming) and it is nice that everyone can use this and there is no charge. The view from Opatija is out to islands and around the curve of the bay, with mountains in the background - it is very pretty. In Opatija (around the old town, anyway), people dress up in the evening and there is a great buzz on summer evenings. There are plenty of good restaurants, some right by the sea. We didn’t get to do a boat trip to the nearby islands, but I would have liked to. There are lots of boat trips available and you can book them at the sea front. It looks like Opatija now stretches much further along the coast - this is great in that there is a 12km long lungomare for seaside walks. However, I am glad we stayed in the old part of Opatija to enjoy the town and its buzz as well as a very nice hotel with a pool and access to the sea.Guest review bySarahUnited Kingdom - 10.0

Novalja peaks during summer for the festival season, with Zrce Beach nearby. However, it's a cute small town with its own little charm, I would definitely come at a less busy time (that being said, even during festival season it didn't feel crowded at all), and do some driving to nearby spots on the island. Driving is definitely preferred in Croatia in general (just be aware of limited parking and teeny two way streets), but you can arrive by bus to Novalja too.Guest review byMayaAustralia - 6.0

Crikvenica is the biggest beach resort town in the Kvarner region, with a choice of pebble, sandy or concrete beaches. There are a lot of facilities along the beaches - bars, restaurants, child amusement etc. There is also a problem - the city is overcrowded in the summer. A dense traffic, lack of space on the beaches, lack of parking spaces. This is the closest coastal city to Zagreb and many other cities in the northern Croatia, so there are obviously a lot of one day visitors.Guest review byBojanCroatia - 10.0

One of the most kind stays in my life: the host gave me very clear check-in information. At the moment I arrived she helped me with my bags and showed me the facilities of the apartment. The most eye catching - besides the view - was the cleanness: everything was spotless. The kindness and warm welcome (with perfect aircondition) gave me a very pleasant stay & even thinking about returning to Malinska in a couple of months.Guest review byFransNetherlands - 10.0
Very pretty historic town with shingle beaches nearby.
Very pretty historic town with shingle beaches nearby. Quite touristy but still has a lot of charm. The castle and the cathedral are both worth visiting. The restaurants are decent and we had polite, friendly and efficient service at every one we went too.Guest review byGregoryUnited Kingdom - 8.0
Stone beach with calm, crystal and warm water.
Stone beach with calm, crystal and warm water. Very good for children. It was really crowded at the end of August, so I advise to arrive early in the beach otherwise you won't find a spot. There is no sunshade or chairs available to rent. The restaurants only offer local warm beers. Horrible! Local wines are very good.Guest review byJB DinizBrazil - 10.0

Stayed in the old town which is a gem of a place, on a peninsula with lovely winding alleyways and churches. So well maintained and clean. No litter or graffiti and everything picture perfect! And there were good places to swim on small beaches below the bell towers. There was also a large sandy bay about 10 mins walk outside the old town near the Valamar hotel. We ate at the beachside bar on the seaside promenade in the old town ( at the bottom of the cliff), they did great veggie food and other options. We also loved the vegan restaurant on the main alley in the old town. We would love to return.Guest review byKatieUnited Kingdom - 8.0

Vir is quite tourist-centric, which has its advantages and, unfortunately, its disadvantages. The island itself is beautiful, I like the hustle and bustle (although we were in Lozice, a little further north, in a quieter part) and there are quite a few restaurants to choose from. However, the shops in the area are like the domestic (Hungarian) department stores at Christmas, no matter what time of year we went shopping: full, the lines barricaded, a minimum of 10-15 minutes waiting at the cashiers. The beaches are nice, the ones we went to were clean, although unfortunately I saw quite a few people littering... There is also the possibility of a short excursion around the red rocks on the far side of the island, the view from there is amazing. The locals were nice, but the car traffic is quite chaotic - narrow streets, everyone is in a hurry, not many people know the stop sign, etc.Guest review byPéter - 8.0

Beautiful and historic seaside town with amazing scenery around it. We were there off season but it was sleepy without much to do. We visited the Nehaj Fortress which includes a museum and rooftop views of the sea and town. The beaches in the area are typically small and rocky. We stayed mostly to go to Plitvice National Park which is over an hour drive away from the town.Guest review byDavid GroGermany
