The town is busy being on the Georgian Military Highway and lacks the charm of other towns. However, the beauty is in the absolutely gorgeous surrounding landscape and the hiking. "I'll never get tired of returning to Stepantsminda. A leisurely hike to Kazbegi is always worthwhile. Summer offers breathtaking views of the majestic mountain, but I successfully hiked in mid-April when the snow was still present, and the weather was manageable. Even with snow lining the road to Gergeti Trinity Church, the path remains walkable. It is a very tiny town, rather even a village near Mount Kazbeg. The town has a very limited choice of activities and things to see in winter. I would say that if you don't ski, you are limited to two main attractions, the Gergeti church and the ski resort at Gudauri, which is a very scenic elevator ride up.
