Walled Gateway to France
One of the major seaports connecting France and England, Saint Malo is Brittany’s most visited town and a tourist destination in its own right.
The Old Town overlooks the English Channel and is completely surrounded by restored walls. You get a great view of them if you arrive on the ferries from England to St Malo (either direct or by the Channel Islands). Once an island, this citadel now shelters behind it the hundreds of sailing boats bobbing in the modern harbor.
Within the Old Town are bars and restaurants serving oysters from nearby Cancale, and many of the St Malo hotels. The most notable sights are the cathedral with its colorful, stained-glass window, and the castle - site of the town's museum.
The beaches are sandy, though the water is somewhat bracing. A causeway leads to Grand Bé, a rocky island housing the tomb of Chateaubriand, its most famous son. To the south is the 14th-century Solidor Tower, a remarkable collection of artifacts from voyages around Cape Horn. Further inland is Labyrinthe du Corsaire, a huge maze that will keep kids busy for hours.
In the Rance River, connecting the sea to Dinan, is the world’s first tidal power station. The road over it leads to Dinard Airport, the closest to Saint-Malo.

Very pretty old town /walled city.
Very pretty old town /walled city. Lovely too walk the ramparts ~amazing views ! But middle of August it was HEAVING with tourists which made it difficult to get around or find spaces in bars etc. A good boat trip around the Bay was worthwhile. Parking a huge issue everywhere . Lovely party atmosphere in St Malo. Excellent choice of restaurants, creperies, patisseries and boutiques. Beautiful cathedral and historic buildings. Stunning city. Walk the walls, dine at one of the many fantastic restaurants, take a boat tour around the islands, jump into the ocean, relax on the beach, or shop at the cutest stores. Our stay in St Malo was overnight arriving late on the ferry from Guernsey. Unfortunately there were no taxis at the port and everyone had gone we were left to walk to the hotel not knowing the way were fortunate to find a kind person out walking his dog who gave us instructions.Guest review byLe PageNew Zealand - 10.0
It was good to stay within the town.
It was good to stay within the town. I found it difficult to find the hotel also the parking. However once I had parked in the underground parking and then walked around a bit to find the hotel things were fine. The city of Saint Malo is visually stunning!
The city of Saint Malo is visually stunning! Its location on the coast makes it breezy and lovely to walk in. There are so many charming restaurants with outdoor seating in the old city. I didn't stay in the walled city but about a 15-walk outside of it (in Saint Servan), but since the weather was so delightful, I enjoyed all the walking. Staying in the walled city would be more convenient to the attractions there, but I used two of my travel days to go to Guernsey by ferry and to Mont St. Michel by bus, so staying where I did made sense.Guest review byThomasUnited States
